Introduction
Phil Cohen
LANGHAM AVENUE is in Parkside, running south from Walnut Street to Baird Avenue, two blocks east of Haddon Avenue. In the years following World War I, many prominent members of Camden’s Jewish community lived on Langham, although the street was never, as popular rumor states, entirely Jewish. This pretty much had ceased to be the case by the end of the 1950s.

Long-Williams
Camden Courier-Post —
The Long-Williams wedding at eleven o’clock will be followed by a reception at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. George H. Williams, 1801 Broadway. The bridegroom is the son of Mrs. Marion E. Long, of 1071 Langham avenue, and for the last few months has been making his home in New York.
Miss Williams, given in marriage by her father, is wearing a lovely pearl d’ange lace gown in ivory made entrain and with long tight-fitting sleeves. With it she wears a cap of seed pearls and a brief nose veil and carries a shower bouquet of white roses, lilies of the valley and baby’s breath.
Miss Flora W. Williams is her sister’s only attendant. She has chosen a light blue crepe frock with matching jacket, ribbon hat and slippers and carries pink roses and delphinium in an arm bouquet.
William Long is best man for the bridegroom.
Mr. Long and his bride will leave following the reception for Boston and after July 15 will be at home at 3432 Ninety-first street, Jackson Heights, Long Island.
1009 Langham Avenue: The Rudolph Family
My mother lived at this address in high school, and I just came across a listing of her graduation, in a Temple University yearbook, class of 1950:

The family was mixed Jewish/Polish Catholic, and had moved from 1339 Van Hook Street.

1000 & 1100 Block Memories
Joe Santosuosso [1022 Langham] was one of my playmates. We used to sneak drinks of his Dad’s sour red wine. Marvin Ruttenberg’s father’s ceremonial wine was delicious, and we would sneak down his cellar [1417 Park Boulevard] and take a swig. It tasted better than anything Manischevitz ever made!
Johnny Furer [1124 Langham] was my classmate in Parkside School. He was a nice gentle fellow. I think of them often on Memorial Day.
I knew a lot of people in the 1000 block of Langham, but not the house numbers. Eddie Saline [1044 Langham], Frankie Conover, Betty Zeidman, and many more. Mr. Holtzman had the grocery store at 1001 when I was small, and my grandmother would give me a note and handful of change to walk down and buy something she needed.
My Rabbi friend, who is a Chaplain at our VA hospital down here, had a copy of a recent JWV news that I read. He was touched when I showed him the Furer-Barag post news and told him about John. Small world.

11 Nabbed by Police in Gambling Raids
Camden Courier-Post —
7 Arrested in Bingo Numbers Racket; 4 Seized in Betting Place
Ten men and a woman were arrested in gambling raids over the weekend by Camden city and county authorities.
Seven were arrested for operating a “bingo numbers” racket. A warrant also was issued for Frank Palese, 400 Spruce street, a member of a widely known South Camden family, as the “big shot” of the racket, according to Chief Lawrence T. Doran, of county detectives. Doran said last night Palese is still a fugitive.
In another raid by Camden police, three men and a woman were arrested in an alleged horse racing betting establishment at 1149 Lansdowne avenue. The place was on the second floor over a grocery store, according to Sergeant Gus Koerner, City Detective Thomas Murphy, Jr., and Patrolman James McLaughlin, who made the raid. Koerner and Murphy also figured in the second raid.
Several racing forms and four telephones with two direct wires to tracks now in operation were seized, according to Koerner and Murphy. The police first arrested Roland Flynn, 36, of 589 Carman street; Neil Zeidman, 43, of 1064 Langham avenue, and James O’Donal, 27, of 1119 Empire avenue, and held them in $1000 bail for violating the State crimes act.
