Six new policemen and three firemen were added to the city forces yesterday in appointments made by Keith Kauffman, director of public safety.
The new patrolmen are Robert F. Whalen, 25, of 2957 Hartford Road; Edward F. Eldred, 22, of 1014 Kenwood Avenue; Robert D. Bergman, 22, of 3148 Waldorf Avenue; Timothy J. It was stated that Mrs. Tilton has been acting strangely since she became a mother eight weeks ago. Coroner Rhone issued a certificate of death from hanging. He said the woman's brain was probably affected by a kidney complaint.

YOUNG WOMAN JAILED ON AUNT’S COMPLAINT
Accused of Larceny of $450 and Three Diamond Rings While Visiting in Camden
Prepossessing and demure and sobbing in excitement, Mrs. Katie Maney, aged 25, of 301 North Eighteenth street, Philadelphia, was yesterday committed to jail by Recorder Stackhouse, in Camden, in default of $1,000 bail, on a charge of larceny of $450 and three diamond rings valued at $250, from her aunt, Mrs. Mary Cassady, of 515 Fairview street.
She was arrested by Detectives Painter and Brothers. It was during last July that the Parkside district was aroused when the robbery took place. There was great excitement about the Cassady home and several shots were fired.
The alleged robbery occurred at 1155 Kenwood avenue, where Mrs. Cassady then lived. Mrs. Maney, who had visited the Cassady home prior to the alleged theft, declared the money belonged to her and that she had not stolen it. Mrs. Cassady alleged the money was hers and that her niece had a male accomplice.

Fire Hydrant Vandalism Cited

3-Alarm Blaze in S. Camden
Camden’s director of public works today cited vandalism and improper equipment as reasons for yesterday’s fire hydrant problem at the scene of a three-alarm fire at 1729 Railroad Avenue.
Angelo Errichetti said the hydrant at 7th and Van Hook Streets, had been repaired Sept. 19 and charged vandals with damaging it again. The director also said that water department employes removed the cap on the hydrant opposite 614 Van Hook Street following the fire. Firemen charged they were unable to remove the cap at the time of the fire.
Errichetti said he will have the fire department equipped with heavier wrenches in preparation for a similar incident.
The fire, which destroyed an unoccupied house before it was brought under control, apparently was caused by vandals, according to Fire Capt. Philip A. Stinger. He added that the blaze is under investigation.
The blaze also sparked a double probe when Fire Chief Edward V. Michalak charged the two hydrants were “faulty.” The chief requested an explanation from the water department.
Errichetti explained that the city’s 1750 hydrants are inspected continually as often as manpower provides. He called vandalism the department’s biggest problem.
“Vandals break off fittings for the brass content,” he said. “Then they fill the hydrant with dirt, stones and debris which clog the fire pumpers.”
Errichetti also said he has notified all city junk dealers to report to police anyone attempting to sell the hydrant parts. He further cited the failure of motorists to report damaged hydrants following accidents. He said five were damaged during the past weekend.
The fire, which broke out at 1:28 p.m., destroyed the unoccupied house before it was brought under control at 2 p.m. A nearby home at 1727 Railroad Avenue suffered extensive damage on its roof and wooden window frames, but other neighborhood dwellings were unharmed.
Third Battalion Chief Theodore (Ted) Primas said, however, at its height, the blaze threatened to jump a 10-foot alleyway and burn nearby homes.
2 Firemen Hurt
At one point, the entire rear of the building collapsed and fell inside the walls. Firemen used the roof at 1731 Railroad Avenue to train water into the blazing building.
A fireman, Albert Jones, 26, of 1146 Kenwood Avenue, a member of No. 2 Ladder Company, was treated for a cut left eye at West Jersey Hospital after he was hit by flying glass during “cleanup operations.”
Jones and Thomas Robinson of 1727 Railroad Avenue, who suffered a sprained left ankle while fleeing the intense heat, were the only known victims of the fire.
Unconfirmed reports yesterday claimed one of two vagrants, known by neighbors to have been sleeping in the vacant building, may have been inside when the fire started, but no confirmation was made today.

Chief Megee, who resided at 1251 Kenwood avenue, died Wednesday in West Jersey hospital, where he was admitted Nov. 11. He was a member of the Camden fire department 28 years.

He gave the name of William Lucas, 23 years old, of 121 North Tenth street. The police believe he is deranged.

Caught after making an effort to snatch the handbag from Mrs. Florence Price, of 1281 Kenwood avenue, Camden, Paul Mach, a young Russian without a home, pleaded before Recorder Stackhouse yesterday that he was driven to desperation because he was unable to get work. He was committed to jail in default of $500 bail.

Pugilist Fined $100 as Night Prowler

Stanley Powelek Given Choice of Paying or Prison for 4 Months
Charged with loitering on the streets during the early hours of the morning and unable to satisfactorily explain his actions, Stanley Powelek, alias Powell, 21, of 1256 Whitman avenue, an amateur boxer, was given the alternative in police court today of paying a $100 fine or spending four months in the county jail.
Powelek was arrested by Policeman John Wilkie, who was attempting to run down four young men who had beaten and robbed a Parkside man.
Wilkie told the court he had been driving through the streets of Whitman Park looking for the youths who assaulted Edward G. Kelly, 25, of 1322 Kenwood avenue, when he saw Powelek and two other boys talking. He said he suspected the men of planning a robbery and followed Powelek for 45 minutes.
When he arrested the pugilist, he said, he found a flashlight, a chance board and a bunch of keys in his car, and, returning to the place where he originally saw the boys talking, he found another flashlight, a chisel and a hack-saw blade. He also told the court Powelek had been arrested for robbery before and had been sentenced to four months in the county jail.
Powelek denied Wilkie’s charges, and said he had been riding around merely “to get the air.”

Seven of the 14 vacancies in the city’s fire department were filled yesterday and a new fire captain named by Public Safety Director Keith Kauffman.
Robert Olesiewicz, 47, was promoted from fireman to captain. He will be assigned to Ladder Company 1 at fire headquarters, 3rd and Arch Streets. Olesiewicz, who lives at 1194 Morton Street, has been with the fire department 15 years.
The seven new firemen sworn in yesterday were George C. Kurtyan, 21, of 2812 Hayes Avenue; Robert B. Shaw, 26, of 455 Morse Street; Richard C. Francesconi, 23, of 506 Rand Street; Nelson L. Stricken while walking along Second near Cox street, George E. Wilson, Jr., aged 45, of 1413 Kenwood avenue, died yesterday before medical aid could be given him. He was prominently identified in the ice and coal business. He had been ill with a severe cold for several days. He was stricken while on his way to Second and Chestnut streets, where the office is located. He is survived by a widow and two sons.

Camden Man Dies of Injuries at Shore

Atlantic City, July 24.—George Thompson, 40, of 535 Trenton avenue, Camden, died tonight in Atlantic City Hospital of injuries he suffered July 17 in an automobile accident.
Thompson was a passenger in a car allegedly driven by Edward Timmon, 29, of 1427 Kenwood avenue, Camden, when it crashed through a guard rail on Albany avenue, boulevard, between Pleasantville and Atlantic City. Five other occupants of the car were uninjured.

Camden Residents and Phila. Visitors Arrested in Parkside Dwelling
Three Camden women and two Temple University students were arrested in a raid on an alleged disorderly house at 1450 Kenwood Avenue last night.
Charged with being proprietress of the place is Mrs. Charlotte Grimes, 48. She is the wife of Elmer Grimes, employed by the city as a custodian at Convention Hall and formerly custodian of the Camden High School athletic field, according to City Prosecutor John H. Reiners, Jr.
The students under arrest gave their names as Sidney Goldberg, 19, of 1400 Mt. Ephraim Avenue, and Herman Katz, 19, of 2601 Wilder Street, Philadelphia.
Welch Leads Raiders
The arrests were made by Police Lieutenant Walter Welch and Detectives Benjamin Simon and Joseph Mardino.
According to Welch, Mrs. Grimes signed a statement in which she said she had resided at 1450 Kenwood Avenue for 27 years, and maintained a disorderly house there for the last seven years. He has had men watching the place for a year, to get evidence on which to base a raid, he said. He declared that only persons recommended by patrons were admitted, and then only after making telephone calls.
Simon, who lives three blocks from the house, and Mardino saw a car with Pennsylvania license plates parked near the place last night, Welch said. They waited until they saw Goldberg and Katz leaving the house, and questioned them. It was on the strength of statements by the two youths that the raid was made, Welch added.
Cases Continued
The five prisoners were taken to police court today. After waiting until 10:05 for Simon and Mardino to appear, Welch asked that the case be continued until tomorrow.
Judge Lewis Liberman set bail for $1000 for Mrs. Grimes; $500 each for the other two women, $200 for Katz and released Goldberg in the custody of his brother, an attorney.
The latter said the two youths were willing to plead guilty to disorderly conduct charges, admitting they had been in the place, but Judge Liberman said he preferred to wait and hear the entire case tomorrow.
In answer to the query by the court as to how the two knew about the existence of the “disorderly house,” Katz said:
Oh, things like that get broadcast around the university.

Aged Man, Out of Work, Hangs Self

Despondent over his inability to secure a position he had been after, Ferdinand Frenzel, aged 60, of 1465 Kenwood avenue, Camden, hung himself to the bed post in his room yesterday. His body was found by his wife, Mrs. Amelia Frenzel. The man had tried to get work during the past week and the fact that he was unsuccessful preyed on his mind. According to Coroner Schroeder, who gave a certificate of death from suicide, a son of the deceased committed suicide in 1908.

Boast of Political Aid Costs Driver $10 Fine

His boasts that he could bring political pressure to bear if he was arrested cost Joseph Mrozowski, 49, of 1474 Kenwood Avenue, $10 in police court yesterday. He was arrested by Policeman Ivan Morris at Louis and Chestnut Streets for pulling out of a traffic line.
“If you arrest me I will get Committeeman Henry Knauer or Commissioner Rhone to get me out,” Morris quoted Mrozowski as saying.
Mrozowski admitted that he told Morris he would telephone Knauer but denied mentioning Dr. Rhone’s name.

Nine Drinkers Nabbed as Witnesses as Police Continue War
THREE WOMEN ARRESTED IN NORTH CAMDEN PLACE
Continuing their drive against alleged violators of the Sunday closing ordinance, police yesterday raided two cafes and arrested the proprietors and nine patrons.
The drive was widened Saturday at the direction of Chief of Police Arthur Colsey to include investigation that minors were being sold alcoholic beverages in saloons and taprooms here.
In Sunday raids a week ago three saloon owners were arrested. Two were fined and one of them obtained a continuance of his hearing on the charges.
The first raid yesterday was made by Police Lieut. George Frost and Detective Marshall Thompson on a saloon at 939 North Third street.
Clem Bridgeman, 36, was arrested as the owner, while Mrs. Mary Frank, 64, who lives in an apartment over the taproom, was named by him as his partner. She was released in $10 bail, with bail for Bridgeman set at $500 for a hearing in police court today.
Frost said he found six customers sitting at tables in the saloon with drinks in front of them.
The customers were held in $10 bail each as material witnesses. They said they were Miss Monica Aument, 23, of 1493 Kenwood avenue; an unidentified woman, who, Frost said, was too intoxicated to talk; Albert Moyer, 53, of 419 Erie street; Charles Luers, 30, of 10 York street; Charles Sevcik, 45, of 225 Milton street; Ernest Ridge, 42, of 619 Cedar street, and Archibald Knox, 25, of 97 North street.
In the second place, at 773 Central avenue, Detectives Frank Wilmont and Joseph Schultz arrested the licensee, Louis Bruten, 58, colored, of that address; Eugene Clark, 43, of 907 Ferry avenue, and William Clark, 41, and Davis Ray, 34, both of New York City. Bruten was released in $500 bail and the patrons in $10 for hearings today.
In Camden Police Court Saturday the hearing of John Lynch, 32, former Camden policeman and proprietor of a saloon at 201 Cooper street, was continued by Judge Lewis Liberman until Wednesday on application of City Prosecutor John H. Reiners.
Lynch is charged with violating Section 422 of the city ordinance in allowing disorderly persons to congregate on his premises and is at liberty in $500 bail.

South Camden Saloonkeeper Granted Continuance of Hearing After Raid
A North Camden saloonkeeper was fined $50 with the alternative of serving 50 days in Camden County jail yesterday by Police Judge Lewis Liberman as police continued the drive against Sunday sales.
The saloonkeeper is Clement Bridgeman, 36, of 939 North Third street.
Louis Bruten, 58, colored, who operates a saloon at 773 Central avenue, was arrested for illegal Sunday sales of alcoholic beverages. He was granted a continuance yesterday by Judge Liberman until September 3. Bruten told the court he wanted to obtain the services of an attorney.
Meanwhile Camden police under orders of Chief Arthur Colsey were continuing their investigation opened last Saturday into reports that minors were being sold liquor in various sections of the city. It was reported proprietors of a number of liquor establishments would be ordered to appear before Chief Colsey today for questioning. The probe resulted from facts uncovered by Patrolman John V. Wilkie with the arrest of a runaway Maple Shade girl last week.
It was reported the State Department of Alcohol Beverage Control had detailed several investigators to Camden to conduct a separate inquiry into the matter of selling liquor to minors. At Newark, Deputy Commissioner Garrett in charge of law enforcement said he knew nothing of the report.
Bridgeman entered a plea of not guilty to a charge of violating Section 5 of the Camden city ordinance covering the sale of liquor on Sunday.
Lieutenant Frost presented as evidence 13 glasses, all of which contained beer, which he said were seized when he and Thompson followed a customer into Bridgeman’s establishment Sunday afternoon.
Five men and two women were in the place, Lieutenant Frost testified, three of the men standing up against the bar and two men and the women along with Bridgeman were seated in the backroom.
Bridgeman protested he sold no beer, giving away to all who were in his place because they were friends of his. Mrs. Mary Frank, 64, who resides in an apartment above the saloon and said she was a half-owner of the establishment, was also arrested by the raiders.
Seven of the eight persons arrested in addition to Bridgeman, appeared in police court yesterday. They were charged with disorderly conduct and being material witnesses. The missing person, Ernest Ridge, 42, of 619 Cedar street, forfeited $10 security which he posted.
The others who were discharged with 30-day suspended sentences included: Mrs. Frank, Miss Monica Aument, 23, of 1493 Kenwood avenue; Mrs. Marie Fisher, 41, of 1031 Segal street; Albert Moyer, 53, of 419 Erie street; Charles Luers, 30, of 10 York street; Charles Sevcik, 45, of 225 Milton street and Archibald Knox, 25, of 97 North street.
In finding Bridgeman guilty, Judge Liberman declared the saloonkeeper had no authority to sell or even give beer away to his friends in a taproom on Sunday.

Patrolman McTaggart, 53, Camden’s Broadway cop, early today was removed to Cooper Hospital for an appendicitis operation. Patrolman McTaggart was stricken at his home at 13[?]1 Kenwood avenue. Dr. David S. Rhone, city commissioner, and his personal physician, ordered his removal to the hospital.
Dr. Rhone and Inspector John V. Wilkie waited at the hospital for the arrival of McTaggart. Dr. Paul M. Mecray, Jr., was summoned for an operation. McTaggart was bodyguard to former Governors Morgan F. Larsen and Harold G. Hoffman at Governor’s Day receptions at Sea Girt.
