Michael F. Kelly

Grocer

Introduction

Michael Kelly was born in Pennsylvania around 1891. His family moved to Camden in 1900. He soon found work at a grocery store operated by Michael Ervin at 11 South 4th Street. He remained in the grocery business for 45 years, retiring in the fall of 1949. At the time of the April 1930 census he was living at 408 Taylor Avenue in Camden, and owned his grocery, Kelly’s Food Store, at 11 South 4th Street. Younger brother John J. also worked in the store, while older brother Joseph owned the Taylor Avenue home.

A few months after he retired, he was injured in a fall at home. Taken to the Fitzgerald-Mercy Hospital in Darby PA, he passed away on February 28, 1950.

Michael Kelly had made many friends in his 45 year career as a grocer. Several hundred friends and relatives came to his funeral at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Camden. He was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Delaware Township (present-day Cherry Hill) NJ on March 4, 1950.
