Camden High School — January 1928 Yearbook
Early in March of 2009 I purchased the yearbook reproduced below on eBay from a seller in California. It had belonged to a girl named Fran Phillips… E. Frances Phillips to be exact… who had lived at 104 Parker Avenue in Woodlynne. Other than that I don't know anything about her at this time. The book is presented here in its entirety, with hyperlinks to pages within and outside of this website.
Camden High School has a long and distinguished history. Many of its graduates went on to careers in public service in the city, to success in business, sports, and in the arts. As time goes by, I will be adding pictures, news articles, and other material about Camden High School.

We, the Purple and Gold Committee of the January Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-eight Class, dedicate this book, in which are recorded the events of the happy years we have spent together. It is our most earnest hope that these pages may enshrine fond memories of our association with each other, and that they may serve to perpetuate our connection with our Alma Mater in years to come.

President's Message to the Graduating Class
DEAR CLASSMATES:
The sands of our hour glass have run their course. But a brief moment of parting and we shall all have turned our steps toward different and more advanced duties. The four years in Camden High have sped by like so many hours. How dear to the memory are the associations made here, the activities, the frolics, and the spirit of true brotherhood. Of course we have met with some unfortunate circumstances which have put blots on our records that we fain would erase, but the bitter has only served to accentuate the sweet.
The receiving of our diploma will not mean the same to all of us. Some few will take it with a sigh of relief that their four years of work is ended, while others will sadden at the thought of leaving teachers and friends. Only through the knowledge gained in winning the sheepskin can we hope ever to win out in whatever vocation we may choose.
It is my duty, it is your duty, to strive with determined effort to attain those standards of character and accomplishment which have been set by our Alma Mater. Let us do only those things which will be an honor to our school and class.

Ben is one of our best students. Latin holds no terrors for him. Ben says he doesn't study much, but sh! We have a sneaky feeling that he burns the well-known midnight oil. Besides his fountain of wisdom we'll all miss his never-failing dry wit which often kept us awake in a certain sixth period class. By the way, did you ever see Benny without Leon? To see them apart would be one of the seven wonders of the world.

One of the familiar sights about Camden High is Gwen sauntering gayly along, hands in pockets, whistling a tune, with her hat tilted at a rakish angle far to the back of her head. Everybody likes Gwen for her wit and vim. We wish for Gwen much success in the years to come.

Our unseen ticket seller! You can't see him, but his voice—oh my! As chairman of our Purple and Gold Committee he sure has done great work. In the commercial department, too, he has excelled as auditor, money-counter and general efficiency man. When, after a course of inhuman studies, it becomes necessary for a class to sever the brake-bands which have connected them with the Camden High School machine and to assume among real men the station fitted for "degenerates" (which the eloquence of debate has proven them to be), a conformity with traditional usage requires that they should broadcast the trifling reasons for which they separate themselves from the common persons left behind.
We hold these truths to be self-evident: that no class can equal that of January, 1928; that there is a time when you must graduate even if you take six years to do it; that it is certain that the school will with difficulty proceed without us. We, therefore, the representatives of the January Class of 1928 of the Camden High School in the City of Camden, New Jersey, do in the name and by the solemn authority of the peerless people of this class, formally publish and declare in this the last will and testament of the aforesaid class that the following possessions are and of right ought to be bequeathed to the personages hereinafter mentioned. We further state that we do not take it upon ourselves to be responsible for mistakes, misprints, misinterpretations, miscalculations, misconceptions and others misses contained in this will.
1. To Miss Burrough we leave our deepest affection and most sincere gratitude for her efforts in teaching us to uphold the honor and dignity of our school.
2. To Miss Blaisdell we leave our heartfelt thanks for her sponsorship of the class.
3. To Mr. Maurer we leave the hope that this book may be worthy of its dedication.
4. To Miss Jones we express our appreciation of her untiring efforts in the preparation of this book. Her invaluable aid has made it a success.

5. To Miss Wilson, Miss Lord, and Mr. Haley we leave our gratitude for their work in trying to make speakers, actors, debaters, singers and musicians of us—an easy task, however, considering our superior talents.
6. To all future class presidents we leave Charley Eichel's robust voice, good looks, genial personality, and executive ability. It may be said here that we know there is enough to supply them for many years.
7. To Mr. Brooks we entrust the athletic ability of Alfonso Tomassetti and Joe Walter, to be distributed to future teams who need it most, beginning with the Juniors who think they can play football.
8. We leave to the Record Staff our best wishes and regrets that they are now to be deprived of valued help and star reporters. Still we think George and his gang will carry on.
9. Edgar Hutton's ability to straighten out tangled accounts and guide a Purple and Gold Committee without disaster we leave to the chairman of the next Purple and Gold Committee.
10. To Ed Parmer we leave Mahl Mathis' paint-pot and brush (though we must admit Ed is pretty good now).
11. On Joseph Dynakowski, the next president of the Student Government, we dump the load that Dutch Carlin has so cheerfully and so splendidly borne during the past term.
12. To any rising musicians we leave the places of Clark Johnson, Marvin Roberts and George Farmery in the band. There are faint hopes of getting any persons to fill these places satisfactorily.
13. To any ambitious members of any classes we leave Dot Robinson's and Clark Johnson's ability in acting and speaking. This should insure future success for the public speaking department.
14. To any timid Sophomores who are afraid to talk out loud we will our revised vocabulary (not found in Webster) for use in talking back to stubborn locks in the locker-room.
15. To the joint care of the next class and of the lunch-room directors we leave our esteemed

and beloved mascot. May his ribs be kept just spare enough but not too spare.
16. To any student with pugilistic tendencies we leave Chubby Stafford's temperament and we also leave all his wise-cracks to anyone who cannot compose such remarks himself on the spur of the moment.
17. For our class certain articles were recently purchased, as it was realized that these conveniences were deserved by us more than by former classes. Hence, we give the following directions:
(a) Desks - We leave the new furniture in the classrooms to all students, provided the said desks be kept free from scratches, put on by more or less nervous personages, which mar their brunette beauty. Some future class should contribute a few nails or screws which will perhaps cause the desks to pause in their sliding careers about the various classrooms.
(b) Flags - We also leave to the protection of the school the two beautiful new flags, which we hope will be treated with the respect and honor they deserve and with the remembrance that it was Benjamin Dzick's oratorical ability that convinced us we needed them.
(c) Soap Containers - Lower classmen, we leave them to you with the stern advice, "Go easy on the soap."
18. Any possessions of ours not herein mentioned we leave to the tender care of Mr. Fox.
We do hereby appoint Temple Ratcliffe as executor of this, our last will and testament.
