Octagon Road

Yorkship Village, Fairview

Introduction

Octagon Road is, well, it’s an octagonal road that runs around Yorkship Square, one block removed from the square itself. Addresses on Octagon include a prefix, depending on where the house lies in relation to Yorkship Square. There are eight prefixes—North, Northeast, Northwest, South, Southeast, Southwest, East, and West. Octagon Road was laid out and the homes built during World War I as part of the Yorkship Village project.

1936–1960 — Jack & Grace Formosa Segal — Carol Segal — upholsterer

My name is Carol (Segal) Swanson. I am the daughter of Jack and Grace (Formosa) Segal. My parents bought the house at 1164 S. Octagon Rd. in 1936. They were married 2/8/36 in NYC. I didn’t arrive until 10/11/46. I went to Yorkship School K–8. In addition, my grandparents lived at 2958 E. Octagon Rd. in the 1920’s. Their names were William and Jesse (Hilsum) Segal. Their children were Jack (my Dad), Cecelia, Roy and Lillian. They attended Yorkship School also.

We moved from Fairview to an apartment above my parent’s upholstery shop at 28 Nicholson Rd. in West Collingswood Heights (Jack Segal Upholstery – 1948 to 1971) in 1960. When we lived in Fairview, my Mom, Grace Segal, did the paperwork and took customer calls at WO4-4481.
