Camden High School — Class of 1923
On March 3, 2009, Helene Tull donated a copy of Camden High School's 1923 yearbook, The Purple and the Gold, which had belonged to her aunt, Anna G. Laibow. The donation also included graduation photos of the class from that year and from 1920, when the students had graduated from the old Junior High School Number 1, located at Haddon and Newton Avenues, which was later renamed Clara S. Burrough Junior High School. The book is presented here in its entirety, with hyperlinks to pages within and outside of this website.
Camden High School has a long and distinguished history. Many of its graduates went on to careers in public service in the city, to success in business, sports, and in the arts.

President's Message to the Graduating Class
DEAR CLASSMATES:
Our four years' sojourn here has come to an end; we must move on to make room for others, and as we leave, we have various feelings. Some, undoubtedly, think our time here was altogether too short; others are gladly looking forward to going out into the world or attending a higher institution of learning. But none, I feel sure, would be willing to part with the memories of our trials, our tasks, or our good times that we have experienced here in Camden High School.
However, this is no time for us to stop, satisfied with what we have accomplished. We must set before us high standards and ideals, strive until we have attained them, then set up higher ideals, and keep working on. Across our paths in life many obstacles will no doubt be strewn; some will serve as stepping stones to a higher plane; others, possibly, may be stumbling blocks. If we cannot get over these, we must go around them; if we cannot go around them, we will take the defeat. A good man is not dejected by occasional failure.
No matter what we undertake, let us never forget the helpful teachings, the broad views, and the truer outlook on life we have learned here. We shall always have a warm spot in our hearts for dear old Camden High School.

Can you imagine Thelma ever being furious with anyone? Can you imagine her eyes flashing and her tongue pouring forth cutting words of hatred? No, you most certainly cannot. She is entirely the opposite—that "just nice" kind, the kind we all like for our friends. One of Thelma's many accomplishments is her aptitude for prophesying the coming of tests. But sad to say, like the weather forecasts, she's sometimes wrong.

We wouldn't doubt your word for the world.

And she's a shining star in the "gym," reminding us of little Hop-o'-my-thumb as she performs spell-binding stunts.

The only time he ever frowns is when he is speaking in the Auditorium, and then his forehead is convulsed into such mountainous wrinkles that one wonders how he will ever spread them out again. He's one of our finest and most dependable boys.

Still we have noticed that it differs from some in that it is made of leather, and has a long handle, and one of its most charming features is its extra large mirror, which is accessible just by lifting the trunk lid. A thousand pardons, Kathryn; a wise birdie tells us that it isn't a trunk at all, but just a combination of vanity bag and pocketbook.

"Abe" is one of the finest fellows we know. He's always ready to help anyone whether his best friend or a mere acquaintance. He stays up night after night until the wee small hours, helping some ungrateful "blockhead" pass his "exams." In the morning his desk is always surrounded by a host of anxious fellows clamoring for help with their lessons. And these fellows are not always from the foot of the class by a long shot.

THE IRON WILL OF THE CLASS OF 1923
To Whom It Concerneth:
We, the Class of Nineteen Twenty-three (1923) of Camden High School, in the County of Camden, in the State of New Jersey, in these United States of America, in departing from the realm of learning into the cruel world, and some of us being sound in mind (ivory), and being very wise and otherwise, deem the drawing of this will expedient, and make public unto all mankind that we hereby revoke and make void any and all wills, testaments, excuse slips, late-notes, and the pink cards made by us heretofore.
It is our wish that this "Iron Will" never be sold to the junk dealer, and it is our desire that the remains of our class be buried in a decent way, on a school day, with Camden High's five-piece orchestra (piano, stool, and three sheets of music) assisting, and everyone, including the faculty basketball team, in attendance.
Since we, the Class of 1923, anticipate the weeping and wailing and gnashing of gold-crowned teeth which at our decease must arise from those that are immediately connected with us, we are compelled to make preparation by dealing with them extravagantly. Therefore, we leave and dedicate the following to the school:
ARTICLE I—To Miss Burrough, we bequeath our sincerest thanks and appreciation for the interest she has had in our class, and for those things that she has done to make high school life worth while. We can truly say that she was one of our firmest friends.
ARTICLE II—To Miss Jones, the teacher who was never too busy to help our class in any way, we leave our heartiest gratitude. It was due to her suggestions and tireless efforts that this elaborate book could be published.
ARTICLE III—To Miss Wilson, the teacher of elocution, the director of music, the adviser of the Mandolin Club, the prompter of the Glee Clubs, the coach of all successful plays, we bequeath the following, to wit: Our deepest gratitude for her help in all cultural subjects.
ARTICLE IV—To Mrs. Brown we leave our truest appreciation for her splendid co-operation in forming and advising the French Society. Many a good time the Society had under her supervision.
ARTICLE V—To Miss Nye, the most important member of the Art Club, we will our most sincere thanks for her help in all matters pertaining to the art of sketching.
ARTICLE VI—To Miss Lord, our most popular teacher, we bequeath the kindest thoughts of every member of the class.
ARTICLE VII—To our patient faculty we give our true respect and honor for the happy hours spent in their company (especially after school hours); we wish them most of the luck in the world, and may all their troubles be little ones.
ARTICLE VIII—To those who want it, we bequeath the remains of our treasury (including slugs, one Canadian dime, and three billion marks), and a very slightly used treasurer's book.
ARTICLE IX—To the Junior Class we leave the right of calling themselves and being known by the high and exalted name of Seniors, and hope they will conduct themselves with dignity when filling our places in the school.
ARTICLE X—To the Student Government we leave a doubtful hope that they will procure as able an executive as our own illustrious and cautious John William De Moyer, Junior.
ARTICLE XI—We tearfully dedicate the following:
1. The questions of "Joe" Tash to be substituted for those of Thomas Edison.
2. The tongue of Ethel Berkowitz to be sent to Washington in care of the Patent Office, as a move toward a perpetual motion machine.
3. The blushes of Leo "Lipsick" to be given to Milton Griscom.
4. The dependability of Fred Janssen to be bequeathed to the Junior treasurer.
5. Harold Kline's immense stature to be wished on the diminutive Whitney.
6. "Billy" Rogers' lung power to be used in Holland or given to Walter Hensel.
7. The inspiring high marks of Mary Carter to be sprinkled generously on those members of our class who left to join the '25's.
8. Some of the Sheik's (Mr. Moro Tussey) wiles to be inherited by any one who wants them.
ARTICLE XII—Lastly, we hereby designate, constitute, and appoint Mr. Orland L. Keyburtz to be the sole executor of this document. The bond to be exacted is his promise to retain his good humor, his good looks, and his professional touch at the piano.
