Supposed Visitor to Reader Home, in Camden, Arrested

Emil Steinhauer, aged 25 years, of 452 Henry street, Camden, was arrested by Detective Hart last night on a charge of being the man who startled the household of Dr. A. B. Reader, 1135 Kaighn’s avenue, Sunday, by suddenly appearing in different parts of the home.

All the explanation Steinhauer would make was that he was looking for a minister to go to a blind relative.

MAN SLASHED IN ROW, SUSPECT, WOMAN HELD

Thirty-two stitches were required to close razor cuts on the face of Finley Phillips, 38, of 426 Henry street, at West Jersey Hospital yesterday.

Police said he was slashed by William Giles, 33, of 439 Washington street, when the two met at the home of Hermeza Russell, 27, of 1147 South Eighth street. Giles had cuts of the right arm. All are colored.

The Russell woman summoned Motorcycle Policeman Thomas Kauffman who arrested both men. Kauffman said Giles attacked him with a razor and he had to subdue the assailant with the butt of a pistol. Giles was held in $1000 bail charged with atrocious assault and battery while the Russell woman was held in $500 bail as a material witness.

429 Henry Street — Shemely Family

The Shemely family lived at 429 Henry Street from 1865 to 1928. Lydia Shemeley (widow of Michael) lived here with her son Charles Shemely, whose family remained until his death in 1896. His wife Hannah Shemely then lived here with part of the family until her death in 1917, after which her daughter Mary lived at this address until her death in 1944. The name was sometimes spelled Shemely or Shemeley.

OVER IN CAMDEN

Theodore Shaw, of 434 Henry street, who was stabbed and beaten at Third street and Taylor avenue was sent home from Cooper Hospital yesterday morning. The police are looking for James Binero and Octavio Dulduca, who are supposed to have been implicated in the assault on Shaw.

While bathing at Cape May yesterday, Ella Elbert, colored, of Wilmington, Del., fell from the boardwalk and broke her leg. She was brought to Cooper Hospital.

William McCarty, of 603 Cresson street, and Samuel Burns, of 406 North Eighteenth street, Philadelphia, were arrested yesterday charged with scorching on a tandem bicycle on the Mt. Ephraim pike.

Harry Thornberg was locked up yesterday charged with stealing a bundle of clothing from John Kenny, of 408 Clinton street.

Policeman Paul yesterday arrested Joseph W. Evans, a lad charged with shooting crap, at Eighth and Pearl streets.

For the second time within a month fire caused by a gasoline stove slightly damaged. Albert K. Snyder’s restaurant, at 311 Kaighn avenue, yesterday.

From eighteen months to fifteen years in the State Prison was the sentence imposed on John Cross, colored, of 718 Sycamore street, after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of complicity in the hold-up and robbery of Oscar Manion, of 443 Henry street, at Ann and Sycamore streets, on October 22 last. Admitting being with two other men who robbed Manion, the defendant denied having any part in the crime.

For escaping from Jamesburg Reformatory, two boys, Robert Alburger, 14 years old, of 444 Henry street, Camden, and Charles Rump, 16 years old, of Hoboken, were arrested at the former’s home in Camden Tuesday night by City Detectives Schregler and Brothers and Captain Stanley. They were returned to the reformatory yesterday morning. Alburger and Rump are two of five boys who escaped from the home Monday night.

PACIFIST RESIGNS

Employes Refuse to Work With Unpatriotic Man

Because Samuel Griffith, 31 years old, of 449 Henry street, refused to contribute toward a flag fund being raised at the Pavonia car shops of the Pennsylvania, East Camden, where he was employed, there was a demonstration that threatened to assume serious proportions. Griffith was threatened with violence until the foremen interfered. The men refused to work with him and at the foreman’s suggestion Griffith resigned.

At the Victor plant an Austrian in the polishing room passed some disparaging remark with the result that he was nearly lynched and was forced to kiss the emblem. Now everyone in the department, as he enters, salute the Stars and Stripes.

ANOTHER VISIT OF STORK.

There was a great fluttering of wings on the chimney top of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Adams, of 615 Henry street, early in the morning. If it had been Christmas morning, Pop Adams might have thought it was Kris Kingle coming down the flue.

But being a merry May morning it turned out that the wing-flapping was caused by the stork bringing a handsome baby boy to the Adams home.

This is the first child to brighten the Adams domicile. Mrs. Ruth Adams has a host of friends in South Camden and no wonder “Papa” wears a smile that won’t wear off. “Pop” hopes to see the lad grow up to be a great ball player.
