Cresson Street

Camden Street

Introduction

Cresson Street was a one-block street that ran from Chestnut Street south to Sycamore Street, east of South 2nd Street and west of Locust Street. There were 20 houses on Cresson Street, numbering 1101 through 1120. Cresson Street did not appear in Camden City Directories prior to 1887, and does not appear in the 1885 Sanborn Map.

Cresson Street was erased in the 1950s as part of an urban redevelopment project meant to provide land for industrial development in South Camden. This project took out every building west of Locust Street from Walnut Street to Kaighn Avenue.

BURGLARS IN CAMDEN.

POLICE CAPTURE TWO, WHO ARE COMMITTED TO AWAIT TRIAL.

Edward, alias “Rye,” Biddle, Walter Davis and Daniel Powell were committed to jail in default of $600 bail each by Mayor Pratt yesterday for robbing the house of Peter Wolverton, 1103 Cresson street, on Tuesday last. Biddle confessed and told where the goods were pawned. He said that Powell broke into the house and then left Davis in by the front door while he kept guard outside. They pawned the goods in this city.

Deputy Sheriff Porter seized the cracker establishment of J. T. Chalfont, Fifth and Federal streets, on an execution of David Carrick & Co.

Supreme Court Judge Garrison is confined to his bed at Merchantville.

‘Forgotten’ Holdup Recalled in Capture of Fifth as Bandit

Police last night cleaned up an old case of highway robbery that occurred at Second and Mt. Vernon Streets last August when Edward A. Turner, 48, of 1104 Cresson Street, was robbed of his watch, chain and knife.

At the time of the hold-up, Turner told police there were four or five colored men in the robbery. Detectives Robert Ward and Clifford Carr arrested Earl Bundy, 17, of 819 Sycamore Street, who they said had the articles in his possession; also Charles Wing, 17, of 1012 Francis Street; Sherman Smith, 17, of 1061 Ivins Street and William Jackman, 16, of 152 Sycamore Street. The last three pleaded guilty and were sentenced to Rahway Reformatory by Judge Samuel Shay.

Bundy pleaded not guilty and was lodged in the local jail.

Last night Ward and Carr with Patrolman Luke captured Oscar Moore, 19, of 135 Mt. Vernon Street as the fifth bandit. He will be held without bail on the same charge as the others.

Sick Woman Suffers Injury While at Rescue Work When Children Start Fire

One death may result and two other persons are ill as a result of a slight fire at the home of Mrs. Lizzie Anthony, 1107 Cresson street, Camden yesterday. Alice Maloney, aged four years, of 1106 Cresson street, is in Cooper Hospital, burned from head to foot and it is feared she may not recover. Bridget O’Neil, aged 24 years, who lives with Mrs. Anthony, was burned about the back, while the latter suffered a nervous collapse.

It was with the laudable object of going out to raise funds for Miss O’Neil, a sufferer from the “white plague,” so that she can return to Newfoundland, that Mrs. Anthony left her home. Alice Maloney went in the front room to play with the Anthony children and while thus engaged a match was struck and the fire started. Miss O’Neil, who was upstairs, heard the children’s screams. Weak as she was from the disease, she made her way to the blazing room, picked up Alice and put her out of the window. A neighbor took the child to a drug store. Miss O’Neil was burned about the back, in her work at rescue.

After the Maloney child had been taken to the hospital, Mrs. Anthony returned from her charitable tour. A neighbor met her and told her of the fire and she was given the impression that it was her little daughter that had been burned. She dropped into the street and had the neighborhood aroused by her repeated screams. She was also taken to the hospital.

The fire did about $50 damage.

Death came to Alice Maloney, aged 4 years, of 1106 Cresson street, Camden, in Cooper Hospital yesterday, as a result of the burns she received Saturday, when she and a neighbor’s child played with matches. Burns extended all over her body. Surgeons at the hospital say she cannot recover. In an effort to save the child’s life, Kate O’Brien was burned about the back.
