Thirty-Fifth Street

THIRTY-FIFTH STREET runs from the Delaware River south to River Avenue. The street picks up again east of the Pavonia railroad switching yard to Fairfax Street. Once on the other side of Westfield Avenue, 35th Street runs for one block between Merriel and Rosedale Avenues. Interrupted again by what was up until recently railroad tracks, 35th Street starts once again on from the southern side of Rosedale Avenue to Federal Street, then on for three blocks to Highland Avenue at the Pennsauken border. As in all numbered streets in Camden, it is North 35th Street above Federal, and South 35th below.

Vets in Colorful Memorial Crowd Convention Hall

Military and Civic Organizations Parade in Camden and Join Services Addressed by Clergy and Congressman Wolverton

More than 2500 persons attended a joint veterans memorial observance in Convention Hall which followed a parade of veterans and civic organizations yesterday afternoon.

To the martial strains of bands and bugle corps, the participants marched from Fifth and Cooper to Seventh Street; south to Haddon avenue, then to Line Street and the Convention Hall.

The parade was headed by a squad of motorcycle police under Acting Sergeant William Taylor. They were followed by the band, headquarters, howitzer, medical and service companies of the 114th Infantry in command of Capt. Mahlon F. Ivins, Jr.

Then came the massed colors, National Guard, Naval Reserve, Disabled American Veterans, John J. Pershing Camp No. 9, United War Veterans, Gen. John A. Mather Post No. 18, Spanish War Veterans with their fife and drum corps and the Clara E. Waller Auxiliary; Posts 518 and 980 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and their bugle corps; Mt. Ephraim Junior Legion, No. 150; and bugle corps; Public Service American Legion Post and bugle corps; Westmont American Legion Post and bugle corps; 50 Pennsylvania Gold Star Mothers led by Mrs. Mary E. Hewson; Elks color guard and the Salvation Army and band.

G. A. R. Vets In Line

Three veterans of the G. A. R., in flag-draped automobiles, participated in the parade. They were John W. Coleman, 76, of 31 North Thirty-fifth street, who served with the 19th Pennsylvania Cavalry; William A. Morgan, 93, of Clementon, who was with the 104th Doylestown Infantry, and Leonard L. Roray, 89, of Glassboro, who served with Company H, Third New Jersey Cavalry.

Ceremonies at Convention Hall opened with advance of the colors to the stage and invocation by Rabbi Nachmann Arnoff.

Rev. Charles Bratten Du Bell, former chaplain of the 114th Infantry, delivered a memorial address, taking as his subject the career of General “Stonewall” Jackson.

Congressman Charles A. Wolverton after paying tribute to the G. A. R., Spanish American and World War veterans, promised that Congress would make provisions to support widows and orphans of veterans who need aid before adjournment this Summer.

Criticizes Veteran Cuts

He attacked any plan for balancing the national budget which does so at the expense of the veterans.

“There are two ways to balance the budget,” he said. “One is to take the money from the veterans and federal employees. The other is to require wealth to help.”

American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and United Spanish War Veterans memorial services and rituals also featured the program. Rev. Lewis A. Hayes, of Westmont, pronounced the benediction. C. Richard Allen, past county commander of the American Legion, was master of ceremonies.

The committee included Samuel Magill, Jr., chairman; Edward A. Stark, A. F. Klein, Joseph A. Kohler, Joseph Whylings, James J. Burke, Norval McHenry, Charles Buzine, William Amberg, James Milne, William P. Breen, William Miller, William Reinholdt; Edward J. Wintering, William Eisele, William Lloyd, Joseph F. Markley, Frank Ellis, D. J. Connors, Joseph Lounsberry and Charles M. Jefferies.

MRS. KOBUS ENLISTS TWO NEW FIREMEN

The Camden Fire Department was increased yesterday when Commissioner Mary W. Kobus swore in two new members.

The men, taken from the Civil Service lists, are Edwin W. Judd, 1052 North Thirty-fifth street and Joseph A. Gforer, 1461 Pershing street. Judd’s standing on the lists was 84.07 and Gforer’s 83.25.

The men will be assigned by Fire Chief John H. Lennox.

MATE SUES BEAUTICIAN, CHARGES HOME NEGLECT

His wife spent her time arranging stylish coiffures for her neighbors while the household fell into a state of neglect declared Herbert G. Meeks, of 1017 North Thirty-fifth Street, before Advisory Master William B. Knight in Chancery Court today.

Mrs. Catherine Meeks, whose present address is Devereaux and Cottage streets, Philadelphia, finally opened a beauty shop of her own, informed her husband that their marriage was “washed up” and went her way, he said.

Meeks declared he tried to effect a reconciliation numerous times but to no avail. The couple was married in 1926 and separated in 1935. The man also testified that his wife went to dances three nights a week and sometimes didn’t return home until the next day. Knight recommended a divorce decree.

Three firemen were graduated today from the Camden City Fire Training School, 9th and Market sts. Their training began June 11 and included one week at the Philadelphia Fire Training School.

Assigned in ceremonies at fire headquarters, 3rd and Arch sts., were Truman Maples, 26, of 1024 N. 35th st., to Engine Company 11, Ernest A. Fagan, 25, 105 S. 35th st., Engine Company 1, and Spencer Smith 3d, a third-generation fireman, 22, of 1523 Collings rd., to Ladder Company 1.

FINAL DIVORCE DECREE AWARDED CITY FIREMAN

Clarence E. McMullen, 486 North Thirty-fifth street, a member of the Camden fire department, has been awarded a final decree of divorce from Josephine G. McMullen, 135 East Bettlewood avenue, Oaklyn, it was announced in Trenton yesterday.

In his uncontested suit, McMullen brought a statutory charge against his wife, naming as corespondent his wife’s employer at a local industrial plant.

I grew up on North 35th Street and attended Henry H. Davis Elementary School and Woodrow Wilson High School. My girlfriend lived on Merriel Avenue and we walked through the park on our way to Wilson every morning and afternoon. I loved the Dudley Grange library and was saddened to learn of the fire. It was such a quiet haven for young and old. I remember the beautiful stone exterior, the creaky stairs to the 2nd floor children’s room, and the almost reverent quiet of the main floor reading room. The librarian sat perched high on a pedestal type desk and wore coke bottle thick glasses on a chain— but had a heart of gold. I became a librarian and lament the lovely sense of serenity and peace that you don’t see in libraries too much.

The home was owned by my Grandfather James David Willmott and Annie. James passed away the year before I was born in 1957. Grandmom lived in the home until the early 70’s can’t remember exactly. She died at home and my Father and 2 sisters were there at the time. I spent a lot of time in that house before my school days since my Mom and Dad worked and Grandmom watched me during the daytime. I recall every nook and cranny of that house and often dream of it.

GEORGE BAXTER, Camden’s new Chief Combustible Inspector, examines one of the 3,000 fire inspection reports on file in his department. The reports he uses to brief district fire chiefs on the latest potential fire hazards in their zones.

“When I want to relax, I grab a fire book and bury myself in it. You would probably call that crazy.”

The words are George Baxter’s, new chief combustible inspector of Camden since Jan. 1 and a 13-year veteran of the fire department.

The imposing title is a new civil service designation for fire marshal, the office which supervises all fire prevention activities in the city.

As the new man in the job, the 43-year-old Baxter brings to it plenty of technical know-how.

“You have to,” he says candidly. “It’s a full time job just keeping up on the latest developments in this business.”

“This business,” as he puts it, is something Baxter “lives, eats, and sleeps.”

He studies it as well.

HIS HOMEWORK goes back to his first day with the department in 1950.

“On the way home I picked up a copy of ‘A Fire Chief’s Handbook’ for $4.50, took it home and studied it,” he says.

His home at 151 N. 35st. [sic] today contains a fire book collection he values at $350. Many an evening he’ll slip away from his wife and five daughters and relax by reading up on a technical fire problem.

His knowledge of the fire business was a handy asset last October when he competed with 11 local fire captains in a civil service examination for the job he now holds. As the top scorer, he was promoted to inspector by Camden Fire Chief Edward R. MacDowell.

The new inspector has attended several fire courses over the years and to prove it has “enough certificates to paper a wall.”

His favorite, though, is a fancy, gold-bordered parchment which honors him with membership in Her Majesty’s Royal Fire Brigade.

“They probably thought I deserved it for buying so many books through their British Fire Service,” he comments.

AS CHIEF combustible inspector he heads a five-man department that inspects the city’s industrial and merchantile [sic] establishments, schools and hospitals, correcting fire hazards and fire code violations.

The department checks out all residential fire complaints. It supervises fire-drill evacuations in the city’s schools; instructs in the use of basic fire fighting appliances; campaigns for fire safety; investigates arson, false alarms—and among other things is now in the midst of updating 3,000 fire inspection reports.

Baxter uses the reports to brief district fire chiefs on the latest potential fire hazards in their zones.

His approach to the job is one of a crusader. And his department, he will tell you, is on a perpetual crusade to save lives.

“To this aim,” he says, “we don’t overlook the slightest fire hazard.”

To make that point stronger he adds:

“If we do our job right not an engine-wheel in the department will have to turn.”

To this aim the new inspector approaches his duties like a man on fire.

A reunion of the Miss Josephine M. Brown Bible class of the old Eleventh Baptist Church, Philadelphia, was held Saturday night at the home of Councilman and Mrs. John W. Coleman, 37 North Thirty-fifth street, East Camden. The class has a membership of six hundred, and was started thirty years ago by Miss Brown, who now resides in California, where, although 80 years of age, she still teaches a Sunday school class of forty men. She sent a souvenir to each one who attended the reunion.

Moss-Simmons Wedding to Be Held Tonight

Miss Virginia Foulds Simmons will become the bride of Eric Leonard Moss of this city, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Simmons, of 27 North Thirty-fifth Street, this evening. Mr. Moss is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Moss of Jamaica, W.I.

Rev. John Pemberton, Jr., pastor of Centenary-Tabernacle Church, of this city, will perform the ceremony, which will take place at seven-thirty o’clock. The wedding march will be played by Howard Tussey.

The bride, who will be given in marriage by her father, has selected a gown of white satin trimmed in lace and beaded. Her veil is of tulle and she will carry roses, sweet peas and baby’s breath.

There will be two attendants, Miss Mary Hicks and Miss Elizabeth Jump, both of this city. Miss Hicks, as maid of honor, will wear a frock of yellow organdie with matching accessories. Miss Jump, as bride’s-maid, will wear a similar costume in a peculiar green shade. They will carry bouquets of mixed Spring flowers. Stuart Smith of Camden will be best man.

After July 1, Mr. Moss and his bride will be at home in the Bellevue Apartments, Bellevue Terrace and Haddon Avenue, Collingswood.

Edward Matlack Buried, Camden Post-Telegram, May 1, 1923

EDWARD MATLACK BURIED

The funeral of Edward Matlack, aged 66 years, who died at Bellevue Hospital on Saturday evening, following a stroke several weeks ago, from which he never fully recovered, took place this afternoon, from his late residence, 25 North Thirty-fifth street, and was largely attended.

Many people viewed the remains last evening, including a delegation from Camden Lodge, No. 111, Loyal Order of Moose, of which deceased was a member. Interment was made at New Camden Cemetery.

A wife, Mrs. Ellen Batten Matlack, son, Benjamin S. Matlack, and a daughter, Mrs. Earle S. Wilkins, of Boston, Mass., survive him. He was a brother of Policeman Albertson Matlack, of the Third District.

The picture of the house is dated based on information from Edith Reed McIlvaine, the deceased granddaughter of Albert (GGF of my wife Betty (WWHS’60) and daughter of Edith). The people in the picture are all believed to be Albert Reed’s family.

The stern woman on the left is Hannah Acker Reed, mother of Albert. The younger and maybe pregnant(?) woman on the right is Sallie Beamish Reed, wife of Albert. The youngsters (sons of Albert and Sallie) outside are most likely Beldon Willard Reed with bike, Albert Centennial Reed, left, behind fence, with Frank Albert (Edith’s father) sitting on the step behind the fence. Albert’s fourth son, Wm Few, is most likely in the “hanger” so to speak at the time of this picture. A fifth and last son, Clarence was no doubt, in the “planning stages.

J. W. Coleman Dies, Once Councilman - Camden Courier-Post, February 9, 1935

Funeral services for John W. Coleman, 87, of 31 North Thirty-fifth street, a resident of East Camden for 45 years and a former councilman, who died Thursday, will be held at 2 p. m. Monday at 2637 Westfield avenue.

Coleman and his wife, Mrs. Anne W. Coleman, resided with a daughter, Mrs. Eva Proud. He was a Civil War veteran and a past commander of Thomas Lee Post No. 5, G. A. R.

Coleman was long active in politics in the Twelfth ward and served two terms in old City Council.

He retired in 1918 as an assistant cashier of the old Southwark National Bank, of Philadelphia, after 45 years of service with the bank. He started as a runner.

Coleman also is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Catherine Parkinson, Los Angeles; a son, Elmer, Philadelphia; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery.

My father Jim Wright Sr. and my mother Rita Wright, nee Genovese moved into the home in 1949 and remained there until about 1975. Dad and Mom raised 4 boys, Jim, Dennis, Joe and Michael and my sister Rita. I worked at Cartun Hardware and was the guy who pulled the fire alarm back in December of 1961 when Irv Cartun’s warehouse caught fire. I have great memories of Camden when I grew up in the 50’s. The Wright family all attended St. Joe’s and Camden Catholic. The Genovese family all attended Camden Catholic as well.

James Garber, a cab driver, of 26 S. 35th st., will get a $1.05 tip in addition to a $3.95 fare he said Levan Foster, 40, of 1031 Federal st., refused to pay Sunday night.

When Foster refused to pay the bill, Garber had him arrested on a disorderly conduct charge.

Judge Dzick told Foster he’d have to pay the driver $5 before he was released.

“The extra $1.05 is for the tip,” Dzick said.

SMOKE BILLOWS through the roof of Cartun Hardware Store’s warehouse as two groups of firemen bring hoses to bear on the blaze which was fed by an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 gallons of paint.

A two-alarm fire raged out of control in an East Camden warehouse for an hour Thursday night.

The warehouse, at 14 S. 35th st., an L-shaped annex to the Cartun Hardware Store, 36th and Federal sts., was formerly a feed store and is now used to store paints, plumbing supplies and other merchandise.

Irving Cartun of 2601 Parkway, Philadelphia, proprietor, reported that the warehouse inventory was valued at an estimated $15,000. Cartun said he had not yet determined the extent of his loss.

According to Cartun, there were 10,000 to 12,000 gallons of paint stored in one-gallon cans in the warehouse.

Fireman Injured

Joseph H. Arensberg, 25, of 1041 N. 32nd st., a hoseman with Engine Company 11, was injured slightly when a door in the flaming warehouse fell on his leg. He was treated at Cooper Hospital.

Robert D. Halsey, 23, of 41 N. 36th st., a clerk in the store, and Capt. Otto Kaiser of Engine Company 11 assisted Arensberg from the scene.

The fire was discovered because of an experiment linking traditional Christmas caroling with electronic gadgetry.

James E. Wright of 17 S. 35th st., his son James Jr., 14, Mrs. Coleman Rosenberg of 16 S. 35th st., and her daughter, Merle, 12, were standing outside their homes listening to recorded Christmas carols through an outdoor amplifier system that the elder Wright had rigged.

They saw smoke billowing from the one and a half story frame and shingle warehouse and the younger Wright sounded a box alarm at about 8 p.m.

Second Alarm Sounded

Engine Companies 9 and 11 and Truck Company 3 answered the call. At 8:28 p.m., a second alarm was sounded bringing Deputy Fire Chief Harry Wagner, Engine Companies 2 and 7, Truck Company 1, and Rescue Squad 1 to the scene.

The fire was declared under control at 9 p.m. and extinguished at 9:15 p.m.

Firemen were hampered in reaching the blaze by a corrugated tin ceiling which separated the main floor of the warehouse from the half floor or attic section, where the fire raged at its worst.

Flames burst through the outside wall and roof of the warehouse, when firemen chopped holes there in order to get a hose into the blazing attic.

Sparks Shower Roofs

Sparks showered the rooftops of the homes of Mrs. Rosenberg and her sister Mrs. Calvin Miller of 18 S. 35th st.

Police had already evacuated Mrs. Miller and her three children Robin, 9, Wendy, 7, and Elyse, 5.

According to police Robin refused to leave her house until her pet cat “Snoozy” was found. “Snoozy” was located hiding under a sofa.

The fire was confined, however, to the warehouse.

Wall Blocks Flames

A fire door between the warehouse and the store prevented the fire from spreading into the store. However the intense smoke drove several customers into the street.

Pennsauken residents reported that smoke from the blaze penetrated their homes, almost a mile away.

A major traffic tie-up was averted when cars were detoured off Federal st. at 34th and 37th sts.

Major William Gwynne of the Volunteers of America was at the scene serving coffee and doughnuts to the firefighters.

MISS KATHERINE MURPHY

Miss Katherine Murphy, 71, a life-long resident of Camden, died Monday in her home, 242 S. 34th st. She was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Joseph’s R. C. Church, East Camden, and the 12th Ward Democratic Club.

Surviving are a brother, William, of Camden; four nephews and a niece.

Solemn requiem Mass will be sung Saturday at 10 a. m. in St. Joseph’s Church. Relatives and friends will meet at 9 o’clock in the home of a niece, Mrs. Bette Murray, 237 S. 35th st., where friends may call Friday night. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Moorestown. Arrangements are under the direction of Edward P. Leonard Jr.

A third generation of the Smith family was sworn into the city’s fire department today.

Following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, Spencer Haines Smith 3d, 22, of 1523 Collings rd., became a fireman. Young Smith also has a firefighting uncle in the city.

HIS FATHER, Spencer H. Smith Jr. of 2965 Merrimac rd. was appointed to the department on Oct. 14, 1942, and has served 24½ years on the force. He is commissioner of The Consolidated Police and Fireman Pension System and chairman of the Pension Board.

Spencer H. Smith Sr., who died four years ago, became a fireman on May 1, 1914, and retired in 1950, after 36 years and four months of service.

EARL A SMITH, an uncle, of 240 Eutaw ave., was appointed to the fire squad on Sept. 30, 1950. In addition, to complete the family’s service to the city, William Smith, the great-grandfather, was a policeman.

The new appointee was sworn in along with Ernest F. Fagan, 25, of 105 S. 35th st., and Truman F. Maples, 25, of 1024 N. 35th st. The three will attend Fire School at 9th and Morgan sts.

THE MONTH’S schooling will include a week at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, where the new firemen will fight actual fires with the Yard’s Fire and Disaster Control Center.

Charles S. Lawyer, of 1175 North Thirty-fifth street, is made a patrolman to replace Patrolman Nicholas DiNicuolo, who was pensioned, while Edward Y. Scott, of Apartment 65, Westfield Acres, becomes a fireman in place of Tenny Hutchinson, who was discharged after being convicted of unbecoming conduct by the fire trial board.

Four East Camden children were killed this morning in a 20-minute house fire that broke out after their mother went next door to make a quick phone call.

A fifth child, the oldest in the family, was not involved because he lives with his grandparents only a few blocks away in Pennsauken. Today is his 12th birthday.

Two of the victims were taken to West Jersey Hospital, Northern Division, Camden. They were identified as Anthony DePasquale, 8, and Jackie Binder, 3. Both were dead on arrival at 2:55 a.m.

The other two children were identified as John Spataro, 10, and Marlene Spataro, 9, by a spokesman at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Camden. John was dead on arrival at 3:04 a.m.; Marlene died in the hospital at 3:40 a.m.

All the victims were the children of Mrs. Geraldine Binder of 433 Garden Ave., according to Thomas R. Daley, investigator for the Camden County Medical Examiner’s Office. Mrs. Binder, who worked as a waitress, had lived at the address with her children for the past five years.

“She (Mrs. Binder) was here 10 minutes,” said Gary Mason, who was visiting the other half of the Binder family’s duplex house, the home of Mrs. Anna Bier.

Mason said Mrs. Binder went to Mrs. Bier’s side of the house to call her mother, and that he was the first to smell smoke.

“Mrs. Binder went to the rear of the house, opened her door,” Mason said, “and the smoke just poured out.”

Mason, of 14 Stewart Ave., Camden, said he and another man at the Bier house, Paul Marioni, of Pennsauken, tried to enter Mrs. Binder’s house through the front and rear doors and also a bedroom window but were unsuccessful.

“We had one foot in the front room, but the smoke was too thick,” Mason said. The smoke forced Mrs. Bier and her three children to flee from their house.

Firemen found one of Mrs. Binder’s children on the floor of the front bedroom, near the door to the hall, Battalion Chief Thomas Blair said.

Smoke and flames were pouring out of the house when firemen arrived after the alarm was sounded at 2:30 a.m., Blair said, and the first floor living room was “totally involved.”

The other three children were found in two rear bedrooms, Blair said, each of which contained a double bunk bed. Blair said it appeared all four children died from smoke inhalation since they were found on the floor.

“One kid — Marlene — they got her breathing,” the chief said, “but eventually she died.”

Blair said the asbestos-sided house was extensively damaged and its furnishings destroyed. A firewall prevented anything more than smoke damage to Mrs. Bier’s side of the house.

Firemen extinguished the blaze in 20 minutes, Blair said.

The chief said the fire appeared to have started near the living room couch, and he speculated that the cause was either a defective lamp cord or extension cord.

Mrs. Binder’s surviving child, Danny Spataro, is a student at the Burling School in Pennsauken, and lives with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wolfson, on Harris Avenue, where Mrs. Binder was reported to be staying today. The other children, with the exception of 3-year-old Jackie, were students at the McGraw School in Camden.

Autopsies were scheduled to be performed today by Camden County Medical Examiner Louis C. Riegert.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete but are being handled by Edward P. Leonard Jr., 35th Street and River Avenue.
