Truman F. Maples
TRUMAN FERRELL “HARRY” MAPLES was born in Wolfe City, Texas on July 8, 1938. He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Corry DD-817 from 1957 through 1959 as an ICFN (Fireman, Interior Communications Electrician Striker).
Truman Maples was appointed to the Camden Fire Department, and graduated from Fire Academy in July of 1964. He was assigned to Engine Company 11 in the Cramer Hill section of Camden. After a few years he resigned and moved back to Texas. He did stay in touch with several of his companions from Engine 11.
Truman Ferrell Maples passed away in Texas on April 3, 2012. He had been suffering from a heart condition prior to his passing.
Smiths Firemen To 3d Generation

A third generation of the Smith family was sworn into the city’s fire department today.
Following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, Spencer Haines Smith 3d, 22, of 1523 Collings rd., became a fireman. Young Smith also has a firefighting uncle in the city.
HIS FATHER, Spencer H. Smith Jr. of 2965 Merrimac rd. was appointed to the department on Oct. 14, 1942, and has served 24½ years on the force. He is commissioner of The Consolidated Police and Fireman Pension System and chairman of the Pension Board.
Spencer H. Smith Sr., who died four years ago, became a fireman on May 1, 1914, and retired in 1950, after 36 years and four months of service.
EARL A SMITH, an uncle, of 240 Eutaw ave., was appointed to the fire squad on Sept. 30, 1950. In addition, to complete the family’s service to the city, William Smith, the great-grandfather, was a policeman.
The new appointee was sworn in along with Ernest F. Fagan, 25, of 105 S. 35th st., and Truman F. Maples, 25, of 1024 N. 35th st. The three will attend Fire School at 9th and Morgan sts.
THE MONTH’S schooling will include a week at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, where the new firemen will fight actual fires with the Yard’s Fire and Disaster Control Center.
3 Firemen Grads Given Assignments

Three firemen were graduated today from the Camden City Fire Training School, 9th and Market sts. Their training began June 11 and included one week at the Philadelphia Fire Training School.
Assigned in ceremonies at fire headquarters, 3rd and Arch sts., were Truman Maples, 26, of 1024 N. 35th st., to Engine Company 11, Ernest A. Fagan, 25, 105 S. 35th st., Engine Company 1, and Spencer Smith 3d, a third-generation fireman, 22, of 1523 Collings rd., to Ladder Company 1.
Probe Set In Blaze; Two Hurt

Fire officials today were investigating the possibility of arson in a North Camden home where two firemen were injured battling a dual blaze last night.
Arthur Batten, acting battalion chief, asked for the investigation after two fires at about 7:30 p.m. damaged a front and rear bedroom at 223 Milton Street while the owner, Mrs. Patricia Gibbs, was out of the house.
Injured were firemen Richard Francesconi, 25, of 3082 Carman Street and Truman Maples, 24, of 1024 N. 35th Street. Francesconi was transferred from Cooper Hospital to Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, for surgery to remove glass from his right eye. Maples was treated for injuries to his right leg.

Truman Ferrell Maples, age 73, passed away at his home on April 3, 2012. He was a member of the Ennis Masonic Lodge and the Shriners.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Maples of Palmer; son, Shawn Maples and his wife, Lisa of Haslet; two daughters, Kelli Ders and her husband Ronnie of Rockwall and Dawn Shaul and her husband Danny of Grand Prairie; sister, Trudy Miller of Elmo; grandchildren, Steven Michael Hoffman, Stephanie Shaul, Garrett Maples, Cody Shaul, and Dylan Maples.
Memorial Services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Lake Pointe Church in Rockwall with Barry Morris officiating.
