Drowned Boy's Mother Wins Pleas for Safety of Others

Mrs. Kobus Announces Organization of First-Aid Squad Ready for Immediate Service at Scenes of Water Accidents and Suffocations
No other child will drown, as did her son, if Mrs. Laura Harrison, above, of 2861 Kansas road, can prevent it by campaigning for first-aid facilities. She is seen looking at a photograph of her boys. One of them, C. Albert Harrison, 14, was drowned June 10 in Newton creek when a boat capsized.
A Camden mother whose son was drowned recently is appealing to save other children from a similar fate and has enlisted the aid of City Commissioner Mary W. Kobus.
The commissioner announced the organization of a first aid squad, ready for immediate service at all drownings and scenes of suffocations. Complaint had been made to Mrs. Kobus concerning action of police at the drowning.
The woman eager to save other children is Mrs. Laura Harrison, of 2861 Kansas road. Her son, C. Albert Harrison, 14, and William A. Crane, 15, of 2844 Congress road, were drowned June 10 in Newton creek when a boat capsized. Of the other boys, John Maher, 18, of 2944 Kansas road, and DeLloyd Carney, 16, of 3619 Idaho road, swam to safety despite a swift current.
Lauds Mother’s Efforts
Paying tribute to Mrs. Harrison, for seeking facilities to prevent further drownings, Commissioner Kobus said: “I feel deeply for Mrs. Harrison, who suffered the loss of a fine young son, and I must express admiration of her efforts to seek proper facilities so that other mothers will not have the same sorrowful occurrence.”
The public safety head said the city will purchase an inhalator at once, and otherwise equip an emergency car, to be sent to scenes of drowning accidents. “It will appoint a first-aid squad from members of the police and fire departments,” Mrs. Kobus added. “Members will be expertly trained and can bring along proper equipment to all drowning victims, if recovered in time to give them a chance to live.”
“In line with this plan, I have instructed Police Chief Arthur Colsey to inform Dr. Garnett P. Rommerrell, police and fire surgeon, to stand ready to hurry to the scene of all such accidents and render whatever aid possible.”
“Orders will be posted today, requesting all policemen and firemen who are unable to swim, and who desire to learn, to inform their superior officers and the opportunity will be afforded them. I want every member of the department of public safety to be in a position to render whatever aid is possible in accidents along the riverfront.”
Car to Visit Danger Spots
“I will also assign another man to the safety car, and this car will continually visit dangerous bathing places to warn youths of what might happen in the event they intended swimming at one. I hope the boys heed the warnings given them.”
“Grappling irons already have been placed at the advantageous points throughout the city and are available for public use.”
“On Monday night a demonstration in first aid will be staged at fire headquarters for the city’s officials, and I expect all members of the police and fire department who are off duty to attend the demonstration.”
Commissioner Kobus defended the actions of police at the scene of the drowning of the Harrison boy. “They did everything possible and best under the circumstances,” she declared. “I am satisfied there was nothing wrong in their actions, after reading a report of the tragedy given me by Chief Colsey. They made every effort to save the unfortunate boy’s lives.”

2 SHIPYARD WORKERS TOLD TO PAY WIVES
Two New York Shipyard employes were each ordered to pay their wives $7 weekly for support by Judge Frank Katzenbach yesterday in Criminal court.
Edwin F. Duffy, Federal street, near Second, was given the order following testimony from his wife, Elizabeth, of 692 Woodland avenue, who said he deserted her last October.
The other order was placed on Emerson Townsend, whose wife, Lena, of 2870 Kansas road, charged he would leave her for six months at a time. She charged he has not supported her or their 10-year-old son since 1937.

Clifford Lane, Local Fireman
Services for Clifford Lane, 84, of 2925 Kansas Road, Camden, will be 11 a.m. tomorrow in the Myrtetus Funeral Home, 1530 Collings Road, Camden. Masonic services will be at 8 p.m. Friends may also call tonight. Burial will be in the New Camden Cemetery.
Mr. Lane, a retired Camden City fireman, died Sunday.
He was a member of the Henry Haines Lodge 253, F&AM, of Audubon, the Excelsior Consistory, and the Kresson Temple Shriners.
