1906 Sanborn Map showing Miller Street from Chelton Avenue to Van Hook Street

Miller Street became part of Camden when Newton Township was annexed in 1871. The street ran south from Van Hook Street, east of South 9th Street to the railroad tracks at Bulson Street, and was intended to continue as far as Florence Street. It first appeared in Camden’s City Directories in 1878. The 1906 Sanborn Map of Camden shows numerous homes and at least one business on Miller Street, all of frame construction. When the Clement T. Branch Village public housing project was built in 1939, all the properties between Van Hook Street and Ferry Avenue were seized, razed and Miller Street was erased north of Ferry Avenue.

Woman Awarded $1500 for Injuries by Train - Camden Courier-Post, February 21, 1928

Mrs. Anna M. Lawson, 1735 Miller street, was awarded $1,500 for injuries she received when she was thrown to the ground by the sudden lurch of an electric train, while her husband received $300 for medical expenses and loss of his wife’s services.

The woman was represented by former Judge William C. French in her suit against the West Jersey and Seashore Railroad, which was heard in Circuit Court by Judge Ralph W. E. Donges and a jury yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Lawson testified she had boarded an electric train at Woodbury. She was about to alight at the South Camden station, she said, when the cars suddenly lurched, throwing her heavily to the ground. She sustained numerous bruises and cuts.

The railroad contended that the woman was slow in getting off the train, and the cars had started after all passengers had ample opportunity to alight.

'Never Drink in Dark,' Judge Pancoast Warns — Camden Courier-Post, June 4, 1930

Judge Pancoast gave this advice in Police Court today: “Never drink when you can’t see what you’re drinking.”

The advice was given Alexander Williams, 23, of 1714 Miller street. Williams was drinking wine in a dark room and accidentally poured some in a glass that contained lye. He hurried to Cooper Hospital, where he was arrested for “attempting suicide” after being treated. Judge Pancoast dismissed the charge.

Fire totally destroyed the one story building 1733 Miller street yesterday, occupied by John Baker. The latter stated he used gasoline to rid the place of bugs and that later when he went to see if the gasoline had done its work and while carrying a lighted candle the place took fire. The loss will amount to $500.

Ill for several months with a complication of diseases, Frank H. Holmes, 65 years old, of 1751 Miller street, died at his home last night.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1.30, at the parlors of Undertaker George W. Benson, Jr., 907 Kaighn avenue.

Rev. Joseph Waters will officiate and interment will be made in Mt. Peace Cemetery.

William Rector, aged 23 years, of 1810 Miller street, while at work in the plant of the Licorice Works at the foot of Jefferson avenue, yesterday, was struck on the head by a falling beam. It is feared his skull is fractured.

A farewell party was given in honor of Michael Rocanello, the well-known baritone singer of South Camden, last night.

A recitation was given by John Morse, entitled “The Face on the Bar Room Floor.” Angelo Brown sang a bass solo, “Sleep in the Deep.” William Stone and Anthony Palma, who just arrived from a successful dancing engagement at the “Cabaret Delink,” Coney Island, N. Y., gave an exhibition of the latest steps.

Those present were Mike Brown, Frank Palma, Nick Beebe, Salvador Beebe, Vincent Cericola, Jim Christy, Alfred Wilson, George Hess, John Starr, John Trano and P. Christy.

Couple Get Surprise on Golden Wedding — Camden Courier-Post, November 2, 1934

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Rocanella, of 2026 Miller street, were tendered a surprise party last night on their fiftieth wedding anniversary, at their home. Rocanella, who is 74, was pensioned two years ago by the Pennsylvania railroad after 33 years service. His wife is 70.

Among the guests were their seven children, nine grandchildren, and nieces, nephews and friends from Camden, Vineland and Philadelphia.

Michael Rocanella, Sr. obituary — Camden Courier-Post, September 12, 1939

Michael Rocanella, Sr., 78, a resident of South Camden for 40 years, died at his home, 2026 Miller street, Sunday. He was a pensioned employe of the Pennsylvania Railroad, where he had been employed for 33 years. He is survived by his widow, seven children, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. The children are Michael A., Joseph L., Mrs. Lena DiVietro, Miss Mary Rocanella, James, Miss Nettie Rocanella and Frank. The funeral will be held at the home at 8:30 a. m. Thursday, followed by Requiem High Mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Fourth and Division streets. Burial will be private.

Son Injured in Quarrel — Camden Daily Courier, February 1, 1922

Michael Williams, 28 years old, 2028 Miller street, was taken to the Homeopathic Hospital last night suffering from lacerations of the head and scalp. It is believed that during a quarrel with his father at the Miller street address, he was struck over the head with a club.

Relics Are Saved at Fire in Church — Camden Courier-Post, February 21, 1933

Sacred relics in St. George’s Catholic Church, Ninth street and Chelton avenue, were carried into neighboring homes when fire threatened the church at 7 a. m., yesterday.

The blaze was discovered by a passerby, who noticed smoke coming from basement windows and ran two blocks to Ninth street and Ferry avenue where he sounded an alarm. By the time firemen arrived, the church was filled with smoke.

Joseph Rocanella, 2028 Miller street, went into the burning building and brought out the host. He took it to a nearby home for safekeeping. Additional sacred vessels were removed by other persons.

Firemen confined the blaze to the basement of the church. Damage, they said, was about $300. It was believed the fire was started by an over-heated heater. Rev. Domonic Burkowski, rector of the church, was absent when the fire broke out.

A vacant two-story frame house and barn were gutted at 12:50 a. m. by a two-alarm fire which raged out of control for nearly an hour. The buildings, located at 327 Lansdowne avenue, have been unoccupied for months, firemen said.

Although a handcar of the Reading Railroad, on which three men were riding, passed over his chest, Joseph Attonio, aged 27 years, of 2031 Miller street, is in the Homeopathic Hospital suffering from nothing more serious than contusions. Attonio was thrown directly in front of the wheels which passed over him.

South Camden was thrown into a turmoil yesterday afternoon indirectly through a slight fire at the Dunn Oil Cloth Works, at Railroad avenue and Jefferson street. A vat of oil boiled over and Charles Hampton, of 2124 Miller street, was terribly burned. He was removed to the Cooper Hospital. When the blazing oil set fire to the place an alarm was turned in. On the way to the fire the carriage containing Chief Elfreth dashed into the moving van of John Schmidt, at Broadway and Chestnut street. The horse ran away and collided with the awning pole of the Story Furniture Company, at Sycamore street, the structure being partly wrecked.

Beneath the awning Harry Haines, a blind man, of 232 Kaighn avenue, was playing a fife for alms. The noise startled him, and when he attempted to get out of the way the frenzied horse dashed over him. Haines was taken to the Cooper Hospital, suffering from lacerations and contusions pretty much all over the body. The fire at the oil cloth factory did less than $25 worth of damage.

Pierce Finds 2 Cops Guilty On 2 Counts - Camden Courier-Post, April 8, 1967

Mayor Pierce, director of public safety, Friday found Ptl. Bernal Ford, 37, of the 2000 block Miller st., and Eugene Bagwell, 31, of the 500 block Trenton ave., guilty of conduct unbecoming an officer and conduct subversive to the good order of the service.

Pierce, after a departmental hearing which began Tuesday, said he will announce disciplinary action after studying the records. Ford, who has been on the force seven years, and Bagwell, who joined the force a year ago, will remain on suspension.

Police Chief Neale suspended the men March 13, two days after they were involved in a fight in a restaurant in the 500 block of Kaighhs [sic] ave. Neale said Ford, who was in plain clothes but on duty, engaged in an argument with Bagwell, who was in uniform but not on duty, after Ford decided to arrest Miss Valencia Robinson, 20, of the 300 block Mechanic st., for loud and abusive language.

The two began fighting, Neale said, and Ford drew his gun and fired one shot into the floor to break Bagwell’s grip. The woman was later given a five-day suspended term in the county jail by Municipal Judge Sklar.

Pierce said a charge of intoxication against Bagwell was dismissed.
