Private John W. Rosevelt, age 32, of 1629 Broadway in Camden NJ, died while serving in the United States Army in Germany on January 22, 1945. He was a member of the 327th Engineer Combat Battalion when he died, most likely in an explosion that leveled a block of buildings at Gereonsweiler, Germany, killing an estimated 15 members of B Company and wounding about 30 more.
John Rosevelt was the son of James E. and Edna Roosevelt. Born on May 2, 1913, his family was living at 1704 Broadway at the time of the 1930 Census. They later moved to 408 Webster Street, a stone’s throw away. James Rosevelt worked as a hauling contractor. John Rosevelt was the father of two daughters, Mary, aged 9, and Maria (Marion), 8 years old at the time of his death. He had worked for the RTC Shipbuilding Company in Camden. He was survived by his parents, daughters, and three brothers: James, then 34, who was serving in the Army Air Force in Miami FL; Theodore, 26, who was in the Navy; and Joseph, 19, at home. There were also three sisters, Anna, 31, Mary, 28, and Doris, 18, at the time of Private Rosevelt’s death.
After the war, John Rosevelt was brought home and was buried alongside family members at Evergreen Cemetery on Mount Ephraim Avenue in Camden NJ on April 4, 1949.

Services for Pvt. John W. Roosevelt will be held Saturday at 10.30 a. m. in the home of his parents, James E. and Edna, 408 Webster street, where friends may call Friday night. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Private Roosevelt entered the army in December, 1942, and was killed in January, 1945, in Germany.
He was a native of Camden. Also surviving are his widow, Mary; two daughters, Mary and Marion; three sisters, Mrs. Anna M. Pierson, Gloucester; Mrs. Mary E. Scout, Westmont, and Mrs. Doris Pierce at home; three brothers James E., Westville; Theodore, Westmont, and Joseph, at home.
