Introduction

Randolph Street is in East Camden, and runs parallel to Marlton Avenue and the Admiral Wilson Boulevard, from Baird Boulevard to the city limits, and continues for a short distance into Pennsauken. It is the first street with houses to cross Baird Boulevard when coming north from Parkside.

Most of the houses on Randolph Street were already built by 1947.

My parents knew Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Moullette. I think my mother met him when she worked at Camden City Hall and now I see that they were neighbors. She quit work in 1947, when I was born, but after moving to Erlton in 1949, I remember the Moullette’s would come to visit (I probably do not remember them as young as 2, so they must have been visiting for awhile later) and for years they sent her the largest box of Whitman’s candy at Christmas. I do have a card that they sent when I was born.

My parents, brothers and I lived at 650 Randolph Street from 1958–1964 and then moved to the Woodcrest section of Cherry Hill. My father, Lenny Ross, and his brothers Manny and Eddie had a long standing plumbing business located at 6th & Kaighn Avenue in Camden. Although I was born in December 1958 and didn’t live on Randolph Street too long, I have vivid memories of buying yum-yum and walking to the Famous Deli on Marlton Pike. I also recall going to the fire station on Federal Street to get a sugared medicine for eradicating polio I believe.

We subsequently sold the house to Zev Rose who at the time was a very young and newly-married attorney. We had a baby sitter who lived across the street named Mrs. Slicker.

My Dad graduated Camden High in 1933 where he lettered in baseball. His Mom was Sadie Borstein, sister of Meyer and Isadore Borstein of Borstein Electric on Broadway. I worked at National Electric at 7th and Kaighn as a teenager.

It still shocks people when I proudly tell them that I grew up in East Camden.

FIRST CHECK for property to be acquired by the Camden Housing Authority for its proposed East Camden housing development, was presented to Mrs. John Dyer, of 2120 Berwick street, who is shown receiving the check from Joseph McComb, authority chairman.

The Camden Housing Authority on Monday acquired the first parcel of land on the tract where a 368-unit low-rent housing development in East Camden will be constructed at a cost of more than $4,492,000.

Mr. and Mrs. John Dyer were presented with a check by Joseph McComb, authority chairman, for their home at 2120 Berwick street.

Present in the Market Street Title Co. office on Cooper street, where the sale was consumated [sic], were Raymond Osborn, authority solicitor; William Barnett, authority secretary; George Adkins, assistant secretary for development, and Thomas McGraw, representing the title company.

Osborn said that he is preparing for the purchase of 12 other tracts on the site, where the owners have agreed on the price offered by the authority.

Osborn said that it will be necessary to proceed with condemnation proceedings against 12 other parcels on the tract. He said that some of the owners have not been able to agree on a sale price; other owners can’t be located, and title is not clear to other sections of the land.

In addition to these parcels, Osborn said, 12 other parcels are owned by the city. He said negotiations are being made with the city for their purchase.

McComb said he expects that construction on the project, which is to be one block south of Federal street and Marlton pike, will be started in early fall. The tract is bounded by Morse and Randolph streets, and Bank and Watson streets, and cuts on a rectangle to Twentieth street.
