1145 Dupont Street — Boy, 3, Saved During Blaze By Baby Sitter

Camden Courier-Post

An 18-year-old baby sitter ran with her three-year-old charge Monday afternoon from a blazing residence at 1145 DuPont Street in the Cramer Hill section.

Bertha Reed, 928 North 21st Street, was watching Michael Moran, while the child’s mother, Mrs. Mary Moran, was out. At 3:55 PM, Miss Reed saw smoke curling up from the living room floor. She quickly put Michael’s outdoor clothing on him and ran with him to the street.

Engines 9 and 11 and Truck 3 responded to a box alarm pulled by a neighbor. The firemen found flames had eaten through a partition in the house to the second floor. They donned gas masks before entering the blazing structure.

The fire spread to the basement and first floor of 1143 Dupont Street, occupied by Mrs. Moran’s mother, Mrs. Anna Abel, who was not at home at the time.

Main damage was to the dining room of the Moran residence. District Fire Chief John Graham said wood piled near a coal stove in the basement had ignited and had fired the partition of the two-story twin, frame dwelling.

Grappling Is Continued For Body of Crewman — Winfield Drummond, 1115 Dupont Street — Camden Courier-Post, May 19, 1966

Grappling Is Continued For Body of Crewman

Rescue teams resumed grappling operations today in the Delaware River in Gloucester City for the body of a missing Camden tugboat crewman believed to have fallen into the choppy waters yesterday.

Police have identified the missing crewman as Winfield Drummond, 29, of 1115 Dupont Street.

N. G. Banks, master of the tugboat “Grace Ann,” told police Drummond had left the wheelhouse of the boat as a barge the tug was hauling unloaded at the Allied Chemical Company dock. He said when the crew checked a short time later, they could not find Drummond and presumed he had fallen overboard into the river. Banks then notified the Philadelphia Harbor Patrol.

The Coast Guard sent a 30-foot and a 40-foot boat to the scene. The harbor patrol responded with Boat No. 11 and its four-man crew.

Gloucester Fire Chief James A. Durkin, now commanding the department was not notified of the mishap until 2:30 p.m., some five hours after Drummond was discovered missing.

The New Jersey Marine Patrol Unit from Vineland sent two boats and four crewmen to aid in the search.

A Coast Guard spokesman said their boats withdrew from the search at about 3:30 p.m., when it was apparent the missing man had drowned. He said when it is “certain a person is not alive, it is no longer a Coast Guard matter.”

Durkin said the other boats continued the search until they were forced to call a halt because of darkness.
