Cambridge Avenue

Camden Street
Page Contents

Introduction

Cambridge Avenue, also known as Cambridge Street, begins at the Delaware River in what was originally called the Pavonia section of what is now considered Cramer Hill and runs easterly, crossing Harrison Avenue, Pierce Avenue, Wayne Avenue, and River Avenue until it intersects with North 27th Street, between North 26th Street and Dupont Street.

Along with Dupont Street, it is one of only two east-west streets in Cramer Hill below North 27th Street to retain its name from before 1899, when this area was part of the town of Stockton. In that year Stockton, then comprising what is now known as East Camden and Cramer Hill, merged with Camden.

Sick Baby Moved Quickly Between Local Hospitals — Mary Crawford, Camden Courier-Post, January 3, 1955

A seriously ill three-months old Camden baby was transferred from Our Lady of Lourdes to West Jersey Hospital in a minute, 18 seconds by two Collingswood policemen Sunday — after they made a record dash to the first hospital.

The baby, Mary Crawford, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Crawford, 1145 Cambridge st., spent a restful night at West Jersey, although she remained on the critical list. Both hospitals declined to give the nature of the illness.

Patrolman Thomas Fox, on duty at Collingswood police headquarters, received a telephone call from Our Lady of Lourdes at 11.30 a. m. asking that the oxygen-equipped ambulance make the transfer of the child. Fox radioed Patrolmen Tony Skowron and George Morgan, who were in a patrol car at White Horse pike and Collings ave.

The two dashed to headquarters’ garage on Atlantic ave. and arrived at Lourdes three minutes after the first call was received.

The baby had been taken to the hospital by her mother, but could not be admitted because of lack of room. A doctor examined the infant and Lourdes Hospital asked West Jersey to take the child, then called Collingswood after being told a bed was available at West Jersey.

Boat Blaze Kills Ex-Camden Man — Charles Edward Capner Jr., Camden Courier-Post, December 19, 1949

A former Camden resident was killed Saturday in a fire aboard a houseboat at Honolulu as he prepared to play Santa Claus at the Waialee Training school.

The victim, who had served as skipper of Honolulu’s glass-bottom boat fleet, was Charles Edward Capner Jr., 29, who left the United States nearly eight years ago to take a civilian job at the Pearl Harbor navy yard.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edward Capner, of 1200 Cambridge street, said a cablegram disclosing the tragedy was the first news they had had of him since he left in February, 1942.

He is survived also by four brothers and two sisters. His father formerly was employed by the Curtis Publishing Co.
