Albert V. Dukes Jr.

Albert Victor Dukes Jr. was born in Camden on September 8, 1914 to Albert V. Dukes Sr. and his wife Barbara. By September of 1918 the family had moved to 2803 Westfield Avenue in East Camden. The elder Dukes was then out of work but shortly thereafter landed a job working as a record maker at the Victor Talking Machine Company. In 1920 he was appointed to the Camden Fire Department. The Dukes family, which included younger brothers Charles and Robert, remained at 3803 Westfield Avenue through at least 1947. In February of that year Albert V. Dukes Jr. joined his father as a member of the Camden Fire Department.

Albert V. Dukes joined the United States Army on March 6, 1943. He reached the rank of Private First Class.

By 1947 Albert Dukes Jr. had married. He and wife Rhea then lived at 1874 Park Boulevard in the Parkside section of Camden. His father, Albert V. Dukes Sr., was still with the Camden Fire Department at that time, and still residing at the Westfield Avenue address. Younger brother Robert Dukes joined the department that year as well, would serve over 30 years and rise to the rank of Battalion Chief.

Albert V. Dukes Jr. was last a resident of Denver Colorado. He passed away in November of 1980. He is buried at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver.

Appointment of Albert Dukes, Jr., of 3803 Westfield Avenue, as a fireman, was announced yesterday by Commissioner Mary W. Kobus.

Dukes’ father, Albert Sr., has been a Camden fireman for the past 18 years, connected with Engine Company No. 9, Twenty-seventh and Federal Streets.

Dukes, Commissioner Kobus said, will replace James Monahan, who died last Saturday in the West Jersey Hospital of kidney disease. Monahan had been a member of Engine Company No. 10, Ninth and Morgan Streets, since 1923.
