Lowell Street

Whitman Park, Camden

Introduction

Lowell Street is a one-block thoroughfare that runs east from South 9th Street, across South 10th Street and Warsaw Street, before terminating at 1573 Mount Ephraim Avenue, in what was at one time a predominantly Polish neighborhood. Lowell Street is best remembered as the home of the Polish American Citizens Club’s building, at the corner of Warsaw and Lowell Streets.

A banquet tonight will mark the official opening of the new $130,000 community hall of the Polish American Citizens club, Warsaw and Lowell streets.

Congressman Wolverton, Mayor Brunner and the Rt. Rev. Arthur B. Strenski, pastor of St. Joseph’s R. C. Church, will be principal speakers. Stanley J. Jaskolski, president of the club, will present a check for $500 to Monsignor Strenski toward the fund being raised for erection of St. Joseph’s new high school.

The club voted to contribute $1000 toward the new school and the second payment will be made at a ball on May 13 according to Jaskolski. During the past year the club raised $101,000 toward the erection of the community hall and its members pledged $29,000 toward equipping it.

Plans for the erection of the building were launched by Jaskolski four years ago. He and more than 40 other members, who served on the campaign committee, which raised the needed money, have been honored with life memberships. A group of photographs of the group will be unveiled in the banquet room tonight.

Other speakers at tonight’s banquet include City Commissioners Rhone, Aaron, Gotshalk and Abbott, Postmaster Edward Praiss and S. Morawski, editor of the Nowy Swiant, the Polish Morning World, N. Y.

Joseph A. Dynakowski, treasurer of the club, will be toastmaster at the dinner which begins at 8.30 p.m. Watson Burdalski is chairman of the entertainment committee and Stephen Blelicki heads the banquet committee. Members of the Polish American Women’s Citizens club, of which Mrs. Jules B. Derowski is president, will be guests.

The club was formed in 1914 by seven citizens interested in aiding Polish emigrants to become American citizens. Josef Zbieratski, first president, will be among the honored guests tonight.

Classes in naturalization were established by Daniel Hoyt, of the Camden YMCA, and Edward L. Canning county president of the Patriotic Order Sons of America. Classes in this work have been continued by the club since then with all tuition free. The club met at 1559-Mt. Ephraim avenue for years before the new building was completed in December.

On November 23, 1981. Robert A. Husband of Wilhelmina (nee Williams). Of 937 Lowell St., Camden. Age 62 years. Also surviving are two daughters ms. June Morton. Mrs. Elicia Nelson. Two sons, Robert G. and John R. All of Camden. Six grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Wong, Camden and Mrs. Constance Bailey of Phila., Pa., numerous cousins, neices [sic] & nephews and other relatives. He was a lifelong resident of Camden and an Army Veteran of WWII. He was a member of the Camden City Fire Dept. for 25 years and a member of the Brotherhood of United Firefighters (BUFF). Funeral services will be held at 8pm on Friday November 27th at BUFF HALL, 883 Princess Ave., Camden, where friends may call the same eve. after 6pm. Interment Saturday 10am Sunset Memorial Park, Pennsauken. Arrangements by E.J. FLIPPEN FUNERALS, 453 So. 6th St., Camden.

Casimir and Kazimiera Andraka are my aunt and uncle. Casimir aka Uncle Charlie is my mother’s brother. They also had a son named Raymond. My aunt’s maiden name was Janik. Cousin Jean’s name was Jane.

My uncle Charlie is the great-grandfather of Jack Andraka who won the $75,000 grand prize at the recent Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

Man in Row Jailed

An argument over a pushcart in which a man was severely beaten on the head and face resulted in Joseph Dworanczyk, 29, of 1155 Lowell Street, being sent to jail for four months in police court yesterday.

With his left eye badly blackened and his face cut and swollen to almost twice its usual size, Simon Balicyck, 55, of 1065 Everett Street, told Police Judge Pancoast that Dworanczyk beat him with a board. He laid that the attack occurred at Farnham Park when he refused to give Dworanczyk his pushcart.

Dworanczyk pleaded not guilty to the charge and said he struck Baliyck in self-defense.
