A one-block street in South Camden, NJ

Hyde Park Street

Hyde Park Street is a one-block street that runs south from Kaighn Avenue between Pavonia Street and South 3rd Street for one block. It first appeared in Camden's City Directories in the 1888–1889 edition.

In September of 1932, Courier-Post reporter E. Allen Hughes wrote a three-part series of articles about the small streets, alleys, courts and places of Camden, including Hyde Park Street.

As recently as 1947 there were 21 houses on Hyde Park Street; as of 2011 there is nothing standing.

Boy's Leg Badly Torn

James McKlane, aged 7 years, of 1210 Hyde Park, Camden, was struck by a work car of the Public Service Corporation, at Second street and Kaighn avenue, yesterday. The flesh on his left leg from the thigh to the ankle was cut to the bone and one of the arteries severed. The right thigh was badly lacerated. Policeman Hart improvised a tourniquet from a piece of rope and stopped the flow of blood. The boy was hurried to the Homeopathic Hospital. Last night it was stated the leg could likely be saved.

Robbery This Morning.

Joseph Savage, of 1211 Hyde Park, was robbed of a watch, an overcoat, two small coats, some silverware and small bits of jewelry this morning. He awakened, as usual, to go to his work about 3.30 o’clock, when he heard suspicious noises, and found that some one had been in the rooms on the first floor. The thieves escaped, taking their booty with them.

Mamie Gibbs died when shot on Arlington Street. Albert Jerome Harris was charged with the killing; however, he was not indicted as the incident was deemed an accident.

Services will be held tomorrow at 10.30 a. m. at the Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, for Giovanni Cirillo, 66, of 1217 Hyde Park, who died Monday after a short illness. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A resident of Camden for 35 years, Mr. Cirillo is survived by his widow, Maria; three daughters and two sons, 12 grandchildren, and two brothers in Philadelphia.

His children, all of whom live in Camden, are Mrs. Daniel Auletto, Mrs. Angelina Mastrando, Mrs. Mildred Conway, Anthony and Daniel.

George A. Bowe, 55, of 1223 Hyde Park, died in Cooper Hospital Wednesday. He was a watchman for Bantivoglio Iron Works, and a veteran of World War II.

He is survived by two brothers, Charles and Joseph of Camden, and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Ferry of Brigantine, Mrs. Eva Claus of Somerdale and Mrs. Elizabeth Wisneski of Camden.

Pair Charged With Murder in Sanchez stabbing — Camden Courier-Post, August 18, 1972

PAIR CHARGED WITH MURDER

Two Camden men were held without bail for grand jury action yesterday on charges of murder and atrocious assault and battery.

Charged in the Aug. 6 stabbing of Miguel Sanchez, 20, of 1226 Hyde Park, Camden, were Julio Martinez, 21, of the 500 block Byron Street, and Isabel B. Ruiz, 39, of the 700 block York Street. Both were being held in Camden County jail.

Sanchez was stabbed at 4:30 a.m. Aug. 6 as he sat in his car at Third and Berkley streets. He died the following day in Cooper Hospital, Camden.

At a preliminary hearing before Municipal Court Judge William M. Rosenblatt yesterday, Ruiz, who police say was an accomplice to Martinez, also was charged with murder.

Police said both men allegedly fled in an auto belonging to Ruiz following the stabbing. Martinez was arrested in Newark last Thursday. Ruiz was apprehended Aug. 7 in Camden.

Julio Martinez was sentenced to six to eight years in prison for the homicide and five to seven years for assault and battery. Charges against Isabel Ruiz were dropped.

PAIR CHARGED WITH ILLEGAL STILL, ALCOHOL

A man and woman were arrested in a South Camden home shortly after 7:30 a.m. today and charged with possession of an unregistered still and possession of untaxed alcohol.

Det. Lt. Vincent Wall identified those arrested as Ella Thomas, 36, of the 1200 block Hyde Park, Camden, and Lawrence Bethea, 51, of the 2000 block of S. 8th St., Philadelphia.

Agents from the Camden County Organized Crime Unit, Camden police and the state division of Alcoholic Beverage Control raided the Hyde Park home following a two-week surveillance, Wall said.

Confiscated during the raid were a 35-gallon still; seven 25-gallon drums of sour mash; ten 50-pound sacks of sour mash and 12 one-half gallon bottles of taxed alcohol, he said.

Raiders also confiscated three shotguns, a .22 caliber rifle, a .22 caliber Magnum handgun and assorted boxes of ammunition, Wall noted.
