Mrs. Zula Boyd Casselman

Mrs. Zula Mae Casselman was born Zula Mae Boyd. She was working as head operations supervisor for Dr. John Stokes in Rochester, Minnesota when she met a young doctor from Camden, New Jersey, Dr. Arthur J. Casselman. She came east and married Dr. Casselman in 1924. The Casselman family, which would include two children, Catherine and William, made their home for many years at 301 North 2nd Street.

Mrs. Casselman was quite active in civic affairs in her own right. Along with Mrs. Miriam Lippincott, wife of Dr. A. Haines Lippincott, she founded the Woman's Field Army for the Detection of Cancer, later the American Cancer Society of New Jersey. She served as a president of the Camden Woman's Club, and was active with the YWCA and many other service organizations.

Last a resident of Haddonfield, Dr. Casselman died in September of 1979. His wife joined him in December of 1981.

I grew up in Camden at 301 North 2nd Street. My parents, under 400 Line Street, the Gentiles, also are part of Camden's history. I lived at 301 North 2nd Street.

Arthur J. Casselman, M.D., my Father was the Public Health Doctor for Camden. He had a laboratory as well. It was called Public Hygiene Laboratory.

My Father's office was at Penn Street. His Father was William S. Casselman founder of the West Jersey Title and Guarantee Company. This is all documented at the Camden County Historical Society.

My Mother shopped at the A & P, which was across the street from the Chocolate Factory. [The building referred to was the former A.N. Stolle Chocolate Factory which stood at 1651 Haddon Avenue. —pmc]

William S. Casselman owned the building at Market Street. He also built the building at Broadway and Market. Woodrow Wilson gave the speech from the balcony there and took (got) the credit.

My Father came to Camden to serve as a doctor and met my Mother in Minnesota, brought her east and married her in 1924. My Mother, Zula Boyd Casselman, was president of many organizations in Camden…the Camden Woman's Club, the YWCA, the Medical Auxiliary. She and Miriam Lee Early Lippincott founded the Woman's Field Army for the Detection of Cancer, which became the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Lippincott and my mother were in the cancer detection area. They helped set up the cancer detection van at Admiral Wilson Boulevard.

They both came from Rochester, Minnesota and Haddon Avenue, Camden.

I, Catherine, graduated from Camden High School in 1940. I met my husband, Robert, in June of 1942.

Dr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Casselman, of Second and Penn Streets, have as their house guests Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Boyd and Mrs. Leonard Hiss, of Rochester, Minnesota.

Mrs. Charles T. Murray, of Haddon Heights, has been named to fill the un-expired term of Mrs. Guy C. Morrill, of Merchantville, as president of the board of the Camden Branch, Young Women's Christian Association. Mrs. Morrill resigned from office last month.

Mrs. Murray is a former vice president of the board, and will now serve as president until February when election of officers will take place.

Mrs. Arthur J. Casselman, member of the board, has been recommended by the Camden group for membership on the committee for the new program for younger girls which the national Y.W.C.A. is organizing for activity in the Fall. The program will be developed along educational lines to particularly interest girls of college and high school ages.

Camden Unit Makes Real Estate Broker Chairman of Advisory Board

Earl R. Lippincott, real estate broker, has been named chairman of the advisory board of the Camden unit of the Salvation Army, succeeding William D. Sayrs.

Elections of officers for the group were held yesterday following a luncheon meeting at Hotel Walt Whitman. Vice chairmen of the organization include John J. Robinson and Mrs. Arthur J. Casselman.

Other officers include Mrs. Charles A. Wolverton, treasurer, and Miss Elizabeth Magill, secretary.

Members of the executive committee selected the following committees: Woman's committee, Mrs. Arthur H. Holl and Mrs. Wilfred W. Fry; finance committee, Dr. F. William Shafer, William D. Sayrs, Frank C. Propert, Mrs. Wolverton and Mrs. Holl; property committee, Howard Hemphill, John J. Robinson, Herman E. Hensgen, Arthur J. Casselman and George C. Baker; public relations and publicity, Rev. John Pemberton, Joseph G. Tweedy, Mrs. Mary W. Kobus, Dr. Albert B. Pancoast and Patrick H. Harding; program committee, Dr. James Rodger, Propert, Robinson, Tweedy and John L. Shannon.

Mrs. Arthur J. Casselman, of this city, and Mrs. Fred Kinch, of Westfield, will represent New Jersey at the meeting of the national board of the Auxiliary to the American Medical Society on Friday, November 15, at Chicago, Ill.

The Jersey representatives will join Mrs. Rogers N. Herbert, of Nashville, Tenn., national president, and Mrs. Prentiss Wilson, Washington, D.C., national vice-president, en route to Chicago. Mrs. Casselman, a former state president, is a national director. Mrs. Kinch holds the office of state president.

Plans will be made for the annual convention of the auxiliary to be held in June simultaneously with that of the A.M.A. Board members of the Auxiliary to the Camden County Medical Society are meeting this afternoon with their president, Mrs. Joseph B. Roberts, 201 Westmont avenue, Haddonfield.

Plans will be made for the annual card party in the interest of the County Tuberculosis Association to be held on November 23 at the Hotel Walt Whitman. Mrs. Robert S. Gamon has been appointed chairman of arrangements.

Mrs. Albert M. Bean, of Haddonfield, was unanimously re-elected president of the board of directors of the Young Women's Christian Association of Camden and Vicinity last night at the monthly meeting of the board held in the headquarters, 565 Stevens street, this city.

Mrs. Joseph Learning, of Woodlynne, is first vice president; Mrs. Oswald Carlander, of Pennsauken, second vice president; Mrs. Charles Chase, of Oaklyn, third vice president; Miss Helen Cook, of Camden, recording secretary; Mrs. Chester C. Craig, of Merchantville, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Charles T. Murray, of Haddon Heights, treasurer; Mrs. William Tipper, of Haddon Heights, assistant treasurer.

A welcome was extended to new members of the board: Miss Ethel Lord, of Collingswood, and Miss Hazel Pimm, of Camden; to Mrs. Daniel Hoyt, who is returning to the board for two more terms after a year's absence; to Mrs. D. Members of the Literature Department of the Camden Woman's Club will meet tomorrow at 11 o'clock in their club house, 424–26 Linden street, for a program on “Historical Romances.”

Mrs. H. L. Westcott is in charge of the program and Mrs. Theodore K. Warner will read the opening poem.

Diabetes and Mental Hygiene Subjects for Public Relations Meeting

Diabetes and mental hygiene in their relation to public health will be discussed authoritatively at the annual public relations meeting and tea of the Auxiliary to the Camden County Medical Society to be held tomorrow afternoon in the Camden Woman's Club, 424–26 Linden street.

A discourse on diabetes will be presented by Dr. Alexander Ellis, of this city, who is a member of the Cooper Hospital staff, in charge of the out-patients diabetic clinic. “The Basic Principles of Mental Hygiene” is the topic which has been announced for a second speaker, Dr. Camilla M. Anderson, secretary of the Mental Hygiene Committee of the Pennsylvania Public Charities Association.

Dr. Anderson covers the entire state of Pennsylvania. She is the psychiatrist in charge of the women's division in the Pittsburgh City Hospital and the Allegheny County Hospital. She is assistant professor of nursing at Duquesne University and a special lecturer on mental hygiene in the department of nursing education at the University of Pennsylvania. “Emotional Hygiene, the Art of Understanding” is the title of a book which was written by Dr. Anderson during the past year and which recently has been published.

Mrs. Orris W. Saunders, of this city, is hospitality chairman for the day. Mrs. Arthur J. Casselman, of this city, and Mrs. E. Reed Hirst, of Haddonfield, will pour and those assisting will be Mrs. William Braun, Mrs. Penrose Thompson, Mrs. A. Lincoln Sherk, of Merchantville; Mrs. Kenneth B. The Auxiliary has planned a fashion show to be followed by cards for Monday evening, March 7, in the Hotel Walt Whitman. Mrs. H. Wesley Jack, of Haddonfield, is general chairman for the affair.

Joseph Sickler postmaster at Salem, will be the speaker at the “Fireside Group” on Friday, March 4, at 8 p.m. “Old Homes of Salem County,” is one of the books authored by Mr. Sickler, who is well versed on the historic points of interest in South Jersey. The public is cordially invited to attend.

The health education department will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 1 at Central Association, with Mrs. Arthur J. Casselman presiding. Plans will be formulated for the annual health education dinner to be held in April.
