Josephine Browning Doughten

Josephine Browning Doughten was born in Camden around 1852, the daughter of the late Maurice Browning, a wealthy dye manufacturer with a factory at the foot of Line Street. She was a lifelong resident in the vicinity of Fourth and Penn Streets, and later resided at 327 Penn Street for fifty years.

She was the widow of Isaac Doughten, who served as deputy state comptroller of New Jersey for twenty years. Mr. Doughten was appointed to that post by the late State Comptroller J. Willard Morgan in 1903. Mrs. Doughten was a member of St. Paul’s Protestant Episcopal Church. She died on June 22, 1933.

Mrs. Josephine Browning Doughten, member of an old prominent Camden family, died yesterday at her home at 327 Penn Street, where she had resided for 50 years. She was the widow of Isaac Doughten, who was deputy state comptroller of New Jersey for 20 years. He was a prominent club man. Mr. Doughten was appointed deputy state comptroller by the late State Comptroller J. Willard Morgan in 1903.

She is survived by five children— William S. of Philadelphia, vice president of Stephen F. Whitman Company, chocolate manufacturers; Mrs. Alfred I. Cramer, Moorestown, widow of Dr. Cramer, eye specialist; Miss Alice Browning Doughten, Isaac, Jr., of Chestnut Hill, Pa., and Maurice Browning Doughten, Norristown, Pennsylvania.

Mrs. Doughten was a member of St. Paul’s Protestant Episcopal Church, and the rector, Rev. R. E. Brestell, will conduct the services at the funeral home of Joseph H. Murray & Son, 408 Cooper Street, at 1.30 p. m. tomorrow. Burial will be in Colestown Cemetery.
