John J. Hainsworth Sr.
JOHN JAMES HAINSWORTH SR. was born in New York in 1881. By 1920 he had moved to Camden NJ, where he lived at 1009 Ferry Avenue, the corner of Ferry Avenue and Mulford Street, with his wife Sabina and eight children. More children came along, and by 1930 there were thirteen children at home and son John J. Jr., who had moved out to start his own family.
John J. Hainsworth served as the Democratic County committeeman from Camden’s Eighth Ward in the early 1930s, and supported Emma Hyland and Harry Maloney over Edward J. Kelleher for control of the county organization.
By 1947 John J. and Sabina Hainsworth had moved to 1728 Mulford Street. Their former home was, and still is in 2004, the home of the Progressive Democratic Club of the Eighth Ward. John J. Hainsworth passed away on March 31, 1958, survived by his wife. Sabina Hainsworth remained a Camden resident until her passing in July of 1976.
Son John James “Big Jim” Hainsworth Jr. was also politically active, and served as Camden County sheriff and as Deputy Register of Deeds. Grandson Joseph C. Hainsworth served for 31 years with the Camden Police Department. Grandson, John J. “Jim” Hainsworth III, was also active in Camden city and county politics. Another grandson, James R. Asher, served for over 29 years with the Camden Fire Department, retiring as District Chief in 1976.

Joint Statement Issued by Democratic County Committee Members
The candidacies of Harry L. Maloney and Mrs. Emma E. Hyland for the Democratic state committee, and the Regular Democratic ticket, were endorsed Tuesday night in a joint statement issued by Mrs. Catherine Corbett and John J. Hainesworth, members of the county committee from the Eighth ward.
“In view of the party’s progress under Maloney and Mrs. Hyland, the shaving of a 40,000 Republican majority to less than 3000 last year,” their statement says, “we are giving our wholehearted support to their continued leadership. Frederick Schorpp was committeeman in the Eighth ward until 1930, but he refused to work and allowed the Democratic vote to weaken.
“We have worked hard since to build up the party in the ward, and urge all voters now not to support Schorpp, who allowed the party to languish when it needed building up.”
Mrs. Corbett, who lives at 2008 South Seventh street, has been a resident of the ward for 25 years and a member of the county committee for four years and a resident in the ward for 46 years.
Ferdinand F. Larkin, who also pledged his support to the Maloney-Hyland ticket, is a candidate for freeholder. He has been a foreman at the New York Shipbuilding plant for 20 years, and lives at 1715 South Sixth street.

No Shifts in Candidates Made as Withdrawal Deadline Passes
3 PETITIONS REJECTED
Camden county voters will have a withdrawal of primary petitions at 4 p.m. yesterday assured that they will be able to vote for all those filing for election on the Democratic county committee as September 17.
At that deadline hour two Democratic candidates by City Clerk Otto E. Werner.

2 Candidates Withdrew
Two candidates who filed and withdrew yesterday were: John J. Hainesworth, Mrs. Catherine Corbett, J. Lewis Kolin, Francis Wolf and Clarence Wolf. The Eighth ward Regular Democrats withdrew to support David Baird Jr., Joshua C. Haines, Democrat of Ninth ward.
Albert E. Burling, for Senate. Edwin G. Scovell, J. Claud Simon, for Judge. E. Van Meter, for sheriff, Leon H. Rose for register of deeds.
Barring three irregularities, once Dunkleberger was running independent in three wards.
Those illegally running are: In first ward, for endorsement of Harry L. Maloney and Mrs. Emma E. Hyland for state committee, there was no opposition to election of Harry L. Maloney, Albert E. Rosener and Mrs. Victor J. Scharle.
In the Regular Murphy organization, E. May for register of deeds.

Birthday Party Given for Mrs. Anna Olsen

A birthday party was held Tuesday night in honor of Mrs. Anna Olsen, of 1811 Broadway, by the Eighth Ward Roosevelt Democratic Club auxiliary at 521 Ferry avenue.
Talks were given by Mrs. Katherine Corbett, president; Edmund H. Olsen, husband of Mrs. Olsen; Custer Brelsford, John J. Hainsworth and Mrs. Olsen.
Among those who attended the party were Mrs. Elmira Schoeneman, Mrs. Mary Gifford, Mrs. J. Hainsworth Rites Slated Saturday

Services for John J. Hainsworth Sr., 76, father of J. James Jr., deputy register of deeds and former sheriff, will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday in the Frank J. Leonard Funeral Home, 1451 Broadway, where friends may call Friday night. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Hainsworth died Monday in his home, 1728 Mulford st.
A native of Yonkers, N. Y., he lived for 72 years in Camden and was a former Eighth Ward Democratic committeeman and a charter member of the Eighth Ward Democratic Club. He was a foreman of the Camden Water Department, where he had been employed for the last 20 years.
Surviving in addition to the former sheriff, are his wife, Sabina M.; two sons, Joseph D., of Camden, and Frank C., of Haddon Heights; five daughters, Mrs. Madeline Foga, Mrs. Sabina Senatore, Mrs. Doris Brzozoski and Mrs. Florence Surowiec, all of Camden, and Mrs. Evelyn Brzozowski, of Seattle, Wash.; thirty-four grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.

John J. Hainsworth is fondly remembered by John Cianfrani.
