Catherine Corbett
Catherine Corbett was born in Newfoundland in around 1879. She came to America in 1897 and married her husband Edward shortly thereafter. After living for several years in Massachusetts, they came to New Jersey early in the 1900s. By 1920 the family was living at 1251 Van Hook Street, the corner of Van Hook and Sheridan Streets. The Corbetts then had five children, Stephen, Frederick, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Edward, aged between 17 and 10.
At the time of the 1930 census the Corbett family owned a home at 2008 South 7th Street in Camden’s Eighth Ward. Edward Corbett was then working as a carpenter involved in bridge construction, and their two adult sons, Fred and Edward also lived there.
Catherine Corbett was interested in politics. Shortly after the April 1930 census, Catherine Corbett was elected as a county committeewoman on Camden County’s Democrat Party. She stood for re-election in the bitterly contested May 1934 primary. She remained loyal to the organization led by Emma Hyland and Harry Maloney, which was opposed by former county leader Edward J. Kelleher.
During the war years, the Bayruns family lived next door at 2006 South 7th Street. Their son, Theodore Bayruns, was killed in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in France in September of 1943.
Catherine Corbett was still living at 2008 South 7th Street as late as 1947, and was listed in the 1947 Camden City Directory. Her husband had passed by then, but her son Edward was living with her at that address.
8TH WARD CLUBWOMEN TO ELECT TOMORROW

The Eighth Ward Women’s Democratic Club will elect its 1928 officers tomorrow night, instead of tonight, Mrs. Margaret Lloyd, corresponding secretary, announced today.
The change was ordered by Mrs. Catherine Corbett, president. Other officers of the club are Mrs. Mamie Piriani, vice president; Mrs. Constantina Schorpp, recording secretary, and Mrs. Lloyd.

Joint Statement Issued by Democratic County Committee Members
The candidacies of Harry L. Maloney and Mrs. Emma E. Hyland for the Democratic state committee, and the Regular Democratic ticket, were endorsed Tuesday night in a joint statement issued by Mrs. Catherine Corbett and John J. Hainesworth, prominent committeemen workers from the Eighth ward.
In view of the constant progress under Maloney and Mrs. Hyland, the shaving of a 40,000 Republican majority to less than 2000 last year,” their statement says, “we are giving our wholehearted support to their continued leadership. Frederick Schorpp was committeeman in the Eighth ward until 1930, but he refused to work and allowed the Democrats to weaken.
“We have worked hard since to build up the party in the ward, and urge all voters now not to support Schorpp, who allowed the party to languish when it needed building up.”
Mrs. Corbett, who lives at 2008 South Seventh street, has been a resident of the ward for 26 years and a member of the county committee for four years and a resident in the ward for 46 years.
Ferdinand F. Lurick, who also pledged his support to the Maloney-Hyland ticket, is a candidate for freeholder. He now lives in Camden at the New York Shipbuilding plant for 20 years, and lives at 1715 South Sixth street.

Birthday Party Given for Mrs. Anna Olsen

A birthday party was held Tuesday night in honor of Mrs. Anna Olsen, of 1811 Broadway, by the Eighth Ward Roosevelt Democratic Club auxiliary at 521 Ferry Avenue.
Talks were given by Mrs. Katherine Corbett, president; Edmund H. Olsen, husband of Mrs. Olsen; Custer Brelsford, John J. Hainsworth and Mrs. Olsen.
