JOSEPH CHARLES HAINSWORTH was a third-generation member of the Hainsworth family, who were very active in Camden’s civic and political life from the 1910s to the mid-1980s. Grandfather John James Hainsworth was a Democrat political leader in the old Eighth Ward and a power in the city Democrat organization. Father John James Hainsworth Jr., better known as J. James Hainsworth or “Big Jim” Hainsworth, served two terms as Camden County’s sheriff and held many other posts over his long career. His brother, J. James “Jim” Hainsworth was active politically in Camden and in Haddon Heights, and a first cousin, James R. Asher served for many years as a member of the Camden Fire Department.
After serving for three and one-half years with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, Joseph C. Hainsworth was appointed to the Camden Police Department. He was promoted to detective in 1958, to sergeant in 1964, to lieutenant in 1969, and to Captain in 1971. He retired in 1985. He had been in command of the Police Department’s support service division.
Joseph C. Hainsworth passed away on December 25, 1991, survived by his wife Norma June and daughters Stephanie and Nicole.

A 51-year-old Whitman Park man was found dead in his home, 1309 Green st., Monday, and Coroner Blake said he would issue a certificate of death by suicide.
The body of Andrew Romanowski was found hanging from a second floor banister by his wife, Stella, police said.
Ptl. Michael Cemeno [sic] and Joseph Hainsworth, who investigated, said Mrs. Romanowski told them her husband had been suffering from a heart ailment and was unemployed.
No notes were left, police said.

Municipal Judge Supnick held Theodore Jones, 49, of the 1500 block S. 7th st., without bail pending grand jury action on a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses.
The complaint was signed by Mrs. Ann Diehl, who testified she cashed the form as a check at the tavern, 1478 S. 9th st., on Wednesday.

Supnick also held two men in $1000 bail each for the grand jury on numbers charges. They are Julius Porter, 56, of the 1100 block Carpenter st., and Fithian P. Hill, 47, of the 800 block Cherry st. Both men were arrested by Det. Joseph Hainsworth.
Porter, who was employed as a janitor at City Hall when he was arrested on June 12th, was arrested at 3rd and Market sts. Hill was picked up Monday at 7th and Cherry sts.
Police Captain Will Retire After 31 Years on Force

Veteran Police Captain Joseph C. Hainsworth will be retiring from the Camden police department next month.
The 54-year old Hainsworth notified Police Chief R. Douglas Holmes of his intention to leave the work he’s been doing for the past 31 years effective Sept. 1. In a memorandum dated July 15, Hainsworth cited no reason for his decision but urged the chief to “give some thought to my successor as commanding officer of the support service division.”
Lt. William Banks, a 21-year veteran in charge of the communications division, tops the promotion list for captain, followed by Lt. Clemente Quieroz.
In his memorandum to the chief, Hainsworth wrote, “I leave the department with a feeling of pride and knowing that its officers will carry on in the finest tradition.”
Contacted at his office yesterday, Hainsworth said he thought it was time for him “to move on . . . to make room for the highly qualified young men now joining the force.”
Hainsworth said he had no immediate plans but was considering going into business with his wife, Norma June. She is the owner and operator of General Plate Glass Co. in the 600 block of Kaighns Avenue.
Holmes said he regretted Hainsworth’s decision.
“He has been a credit to the police department and a loyal officer. I’m really sorry to see him leave.” said the police chief.
Hainsworth joined the Camden police force March 16, 1954, after serving for three and a half years with the Marine Corps.
He was promoted to the rank of detective in 1958 and became a sergeant in 1964. Hainsworth advanced to the rank of lieutenant in 1969 and became captain Nov. 4, 1971.
In addition to receiving a pension amounting to 65 percent of his $36,400 annual salary, Hainsworth will receive a lump sum payment he estimates at more than $65,000 for accumulated sick pay and unused vacation and holiday pay.
