Camden, N.J. — Fairview Yorkship Square War Memorial
The Fairview Yorkship Square War Memorial, located on Yorkship Square in the historic Fairview Village section of Camden, N.J.
Situated on Yorkship Square in the historic Fairview Village section of Camden, N.J., this monument was raised by a neighborhood organization known as the United Memorial Association of Fairview. A bronze plaque was later added to memorialize two fallen heroes of the Korean War, and one from Vietnam.
This neighborhood was built around the time of World War I to house workers for the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, a major employer in the region and a vital part of America’s defense industry.
This neighborhood lies partially in what was Camden’s 8th Ward. Some of the men memorialized here also have their names engraved on the 8th Ward World War II War Memorial located on the grounds of American Legion Post 274 at Broadway (Rte. 551) & Jefferson Street in Camden.

Fairview to Unveil Plate Tomorrow

Parade Scheduled; Over 500 Names of Service Men Inscribed
The United Memorial Association of Fairview will realize its ambition tomorrow when a caststone honor roll on Yorkship Square will be unveiled. The names of 500 persons are inscribed.
Funds for the roll, amounting to about $1600, were raised through popular subscriptions during the Summer months. An active door to door drive, donations from business establishments, and individual contributions brought the required amount.
Among the original founders of the Memorial Association, and active in the honor roll campaign, are J. H. Shaw, Burnell Hartman, Mrs. Mae Miller, Helen Silliphant, Gertrude Carr, Hazel Elliott, Kenneth Albert and Arno Schade.
A parade will march from the American Legion hall Black Horse pike and Collings road, at 2 p.m., west on Collings road to Alabama road to Yorkship square to Yorkship road, north on Yorkship road to Congress road, and then countermarch to Yorkship square. The parade will be composed of three divisions. The first division will consist of men and women of the armed forces who are home on leave, State Guard under the leadership of Captain Sweeney, American Legion Post No. 71, Post No. 71 Legion Auxiliary, Fair-Coli Post, VFW, and 28th Division Society.
The second division will consist of all Civilian Defense units, auxiliary police, auxiliary firemen, women’s motor corps, air raid wardens of District 10, Zones 2 and 3, messengers, etc.
Third division will be made up of units from religious, political, fraternal, and social organizations of Fairview. Music will be furnished by bands from Camden.
Mayor Brunner, Commissioner Gotshalk and others will speak at the exercises at Yorkship Square following the parade. Gold star mothers will be presented with flowers by Mayor Brunner, and the Mothers Service Club of Fairview and other organizations will place flowers on the honor roll. Boy and girl scout troops will perform a flag drill before the monument using the 32 flags of the United Nations.
Residents of Fairview have been urged to display the national colors tomorrow, especially those residing along the line of march.
HMTS Rohna
One man listed on this memorial, Joseph H. Johnson, died when the troop transport HMTS Rohna was struck by a German guided glider bomb and sank off the coast of North Africa. Five other men from South Camden — Frank Ballerino, Michael Carr, Stephen V. Koscianski, Lewis Riondino, and Michael Yachus — also were lost that day, along with six other Camden County men: 19 year-old Harry V. Taylor Jr. of Haddonfield, William McKeon of Blackwood, Merl Reagle of Lindenwold, Carl Johanson and Joseph K. Jenkins of Pennsauken, and Elmer F. Day of Merchantville. In addition, eight other South Jersey men were killed. In total, 1,015 men were lost, but the story was never told to the families or the general public for over 57 years due to wartime censorship.
