Biography
Private Charles T. O’Neil was born in 1908 to Charles P. and Mary O’Neil. He grew up in Camden, NJ, attended St. Mary’s School, and had worked at the New York Shipbuilding Company yards in Camden prior to entering the Army on September 11, 1943. After training in South Carolina and at Fort Meade, MD, he was sent overseas in February of 1944. Serving in Italy, he was with the first U.S. Army to enter Rome.
Private O’Neil was killed in action in Italy in the summer of 1944, at the age of 36. Surviving Private O’Neil were his father and sister Margaret Toussaint, of 2048 Kansas Road, Camden, NJ, and sister Mary Balyer of 1063 Niagara Road, Camden, NJ, with whom he had made his home.
