Woolwich Avenue

Camden Street

Introduction

Woolwich Avenue, which appeared in City Directories from 1904 through 1947, appears to be a street that never was, at least under the name Woolwich Avenue or Woolwich Street.

Woolwich Avenue first appears in Camden City Directories in 1904. Woolwich Avenue was intended to run southeast from Baird Avenue towards Pennsauken Township, between the Cooper River and Maplewood Avenue. Maplewood Avenue, which does exist, although few know of it, runs parallel to Randolph Street and Admiral Wilson Boulevard, from a point southeast of Baird Boulevard to Thorndyke Street.

It appears that when what is now the Admiral Wilson Boulevard was built in the 1920s, the right of way for Woolwich Avenue was utilized for the boulevard project. This theory does fit the locations given in the City Directories. Woolwich Avenue does not appear in the 1961 Sanborn Map of Camden.
