Introduction
Newkirk Place lay between North 3rd Street, Market Street, North 4th Street, and Arch Street. It could only be accessed through an alley that led east, beginning between 36 North 3rd Street and 38 North 3rd Street. At this point it is not known who developed the land and built the houses, but the 1876 City Directory shows a Thompson Newkirk and a John Newkirk at 38 North 3rd Street.
The 1885, 1891, and 1906 Sanborn Maps show five brick dwellings on Newkirk Place. All were gone by the time the 1947 City Directory was compiled.

The Cause of Her Death Unknown
Philadelphia Inquirer —
County Physician Iszard testified at an inquest yesterday in Camden in the case of Mrs. Sallie Myers, who was found dead at 40 Newkirk place, that a post-mortem examination showed evidence of criminal malpractice. Dr. H. Knox Stewart, of 1512 Mount Vernon street, Philadelphia, had prescribed for congestion of the lungs. He said Mrs. Myers only called once at his office and said nothing about any other trouble than the lung complaint.
The jury returned a verdict of death from unknown causes.

Wrote Out Receipt in Death's Presence
Philadelphia Inquirer —
Sitting at the table with his head resting on his hand as though in meditation, the body of J. Laudenslager, 55 years old, who lived alone at 42 Newkirk place, Camden, was found last night. Coroner Fithian gave a certificate of death as due to heart disease.
It was a rent collector that entered the room and found Laudenslager. The latter had his eyes open and seemed to be thinking deeply. The collector passed the time of day with him and then sat down to write out a receipt for the rent. Then he realized that Laudenslager had a peculiar pallor and a moment later he realized that the silent man was dead.
Coroner Fithian found tax receipts on the body which indicated that Laudenslager owned considerable property in Delaware, Atlantic City and Camden. The body was taken to the morgue to await a claimant.
