This photo, most likely taken in 1891, shows members, family and friends of the Citizens Fire Company No. 1 in front of their quarters on Cooper Avenue across from Cleveland Avenue, which, after 1899, was known as 715 North 27th Street. This building was replaced by a new, two-story firehouse, in 1893.
Members of the Citizens Fire Company No. 1 with hose carriage are pictured in front of their new firehouse in the mid 1890s. The building was located on Cooper Avenue across from Cleveland Avenue, which, after 1899, was known as 715 North 27th Street. From 1900 to at least 1914 the building was known as Citizen’s Hall. As early as 1924 through 1929 it was called Red Men’s Hall, and was the home of the Black Hawk Tribe, Improved Order of Red Men. The 1947 City Directory shows Harry’s Sign Shop and Post Office Substation Number 8 sharing this address.

DRIVER ARRESTED HERE ON MATRON'S COMPLAINT

David Moskowitz, 53, 1238 Kaighn avenue, was arrested last night on a charge of reckless driving and released on $25 bail for a hearing tonight in traffic court.
Complaint was made by Mrs. Elsie Gehm, of 2826 Cleveland avenue, this city, who is a matron at the city jail. Mrs Gehm reported her car was nearly forced into one of the iron poles beneath the railroad bridge at Haddon avenue and Line street when Moskowitz swerved his vehicle out of line. The matron trailed Moskowitz to Broadway and Cooper streets where she notified Motorcycle Policeman George Schuyler who arrested him at the bridge plaza.
CAMDEN POLICE MATRON TO ATTEND V.F.W. PARLEY

Mrs. Elsie Gehm, 2826 Cleveland Avenue, matron at police headquarters, will attend the fourteenth annual state encampment of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Atlantic City today, tomorrow and Saturday, as a delegate of the auxiliary.
Mrs. Gehm will also be a delegate to the national convention of the V.F.W. Auxiliary at Milwaukee from Aug. 29 to Sept. 5. Mrs. Gehm is a former member of the Camden County Republican Executive Committee. She will be elected a member of the Police and Firemen’s Association tonight.

With their lips swollen until they appeared like those of Hottentots, Harry Preller, 11 years old, of 2837 Cleveland avenue, and Irene Steward, 15 years old, of 811 Silver street, were treated at the Cooper Hospital. They were victims of insect stings.
2837 Cleveland Ave: Owned by George Baird and his wife Estella. After the wife died, George remarried Bertha Lemmerman (who was previously married to Arthur Murphy), and they had a son together. George died in that house around 1942. After a little while, Bertha moved out and back into one of her previous homes, 2012 Wayne Ave. It is actually funny because Bertha’s nephew married Fred and Louisa’s one granddaughter. Bertha lived on her house in Wayne avenue which also was right next to her twin brother’s home Gustave William Lemmerman (Gus), who is my ancestor. Gus and Bertha were the oldest children of Wilhelm and Emma Lemmerman, who owned their own grocery store on River Avenue.

2838–2840 Cleveland Avenue
My ancestors grew up in North Cramer Hill area. The Donner family, Friedrich Donner (Fred), his wife Louise (went by Louisa) (née Hertler), and their family lived most of their lives on Cleveland Avenue. Fred and Louisa lived in 2840 Cleveland Avenue from 1892 until Louisa died in 1934. The house next to it 2838 Cleveland Ave was owned by their daughter Freda Bobo and her husband in 1911, and then she moved in with her parents with her son while her husband lived other places. After she moved out, their oldest daughter Louise Wroten and her husband Gordy along with Gordy’s father James Wroten and younger brother Otis Wroten lived there until James died. While the Donner’s lived in 2840, a lot happened. Fred and Louisa’s youngest child Stella died at the age of 4 by accidentally setting herself aflame in their front yard while trying to help her mother get rid of paper scraps.

MRS. MARGARET T. FULLERTON — Mrs. Margaret T. Fullerton, 57, resident of 2907 Cleveland avenue for the past 35 years, died early yesterday in Cooper Hospital. She was the wife of William G. Fullerton, retired Public Service lineman. Mrs. Fullerton was an active member of the Crescent Chapter, No. 55, Eastern Star, having been chairman of the ways and means committee of the chapter for the past three years. Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, George and Edward, of Camden; William, Jr., of Mt. Holly; three daughters, Mrs. Blanche Crothers, Mrs. Margaret Haines and Miss Helen Fullerton, all of Camden, and nine grandchildren. Eastern Star rites will be held Thursday night. MISS HELEN FULLERTON — Funeral services for Miss Helen Fullerton, 39, who died Monday at her home, 2907 Cleveland avenue, will be held there at 1 p. m. tomorrow. Miss Fullerton was a lifelong resident of Camden and had been ill of a heart condition for several years. She formerly was employed by the Esterbrook Pen Company. She is survived by her father, William G. Fullerton, a retired Public Service employe; three brothers, George, William and Edward, all of Camden, and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Haines, Audubon, and Mrs. Blanche Crothers, Camden.
