Robert Patrick Munro

ROBERT PATRICK MUNRO was born in Camden in March of 1889 to Alexander and Mary Munro. Alexander Munro, a Scotch immigrant, had married Mary Ann Theresa Kelly in November of 1887 at Trenton, N.J. Sadly, Alexander Munro died in November of 1891.

Robert Patrick Munro married wife Anna around 1911. Family lore says he boxed until he was injured somehow and had to give it up. He was also known to have umpired baseball, most likely in the very active independent, industrial, and semi-pro leagues that operated in and around Camden.

The 1920 Census shows that Robert Patrick Munro owned a home at 36 Church Street in East Camden. He had lived there as early as June of 1917, as evidenced from his draft card. The 1920 Census shows the Munro family including wife Anna, son Robert L., 7, and daughters Helen and Anna, 5 and 3 respectively. At the time of the census he worked as a foreman of riveters. When the Census was taken again in 1930, Mr. Munro was working as an acetylene welder at a soap factory, very possibly the Iowa Soap Company’s plant in the 1600 block of Federal Street.

Employed as an inspector prior to his death, Robert Patrick Munro left this earth on February 28, 1934. He is buried at Arlington Cemetery in Pennsauken, N.J. The Munro family remained on Church Street through at least 1936. 1947 found the family living at 427 Morse Street. Robert L. Munro had moved to nearby Collingswood by 1959, and remained in Camden County until his passing in 1987.
