Joseph F. Dmochowski

Camden firefighter, Engine No. 11, 1947–1962

Joseph F. Dmochowski

JOSEPH F. DMOCHOWSKI was born on November 2, 1912 in Camden, New Jersey to Alex and Rosie Dmochowski. The Dmochowskis had come to Camden from Delaware around 1912. By 1918 the family owned a home at 1221 Thurman Street. The family then included seven children, Alex Jr., Joseph, Frances, Helen, Blanche, Josephine, and Walter. Alex Sr. was working as a trimmer at a leather factory, Alex Jr. as a clerk in a grocery store, and Joseph, who had left school after the 11th grade, as a wool sorter, probably at Eavenson & Levering at South 4th and Jackson Streets.

Joseph Dmochowski had married and divorced when he was inducted into the United States Army on May 15, 1942 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Joseph F. Dmochowski was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on March 5, 1947. He reported for duty the same day.

The 1947 Camden City Directory shows Joseph Dmochowski living with his parents at 1221 Thurman Street. The family also included two sisters, Blanche and Helen. Joseph Dmochowski later moved to 3311 Fremont Avenue in East Camden. Joseph Dmochowski had already been working with the Fire Department when this directory was compiled. His father was then working at the Allied Kid Company leather factory.

The 1959 New Jersey Bell Telephone Directory shows Joseph Dmochowski living at 1653 Olympia Road in Camden’s Fairview section. Joseph Dmochowski retired from the department on a disability pension effective November 1, 1962.

Joseph Dmochowski is not listed in the 1970 New Jersey Bell Telephone Directory. However, the Dmochowski family was still living at 1221 Thurman Street as late as the early 1970s.

Late a resident of Hollywood, Florida, Joseph F. Dmochowski passed away on June 6, 1985.
