Isaac Z. Gosling

Technician Fourth Class Isaac Z. Gosling, named for his grandfather, was born in Camden NJ on September 22, 1911, to Boston and Elizabeth Gosling. The family lived at 2826 Garfield Avenue in Camden’s Cramer Hill section just before he was born. Boston Gosling worked as a carpenter and as a bricklayer. The family had moved across the tracks—the tracks being in this case the Pavonia railroad switching yards—to 118 North 23rd Street by September 12, 1918, when Boston Gosling registered for the draft. He had then been working as a bricklayer for Charles Baxter in Merchantville NJ. Sadly, Boston Gosling passed away of pneumonia in October of 1918, very possibly a victim of the influenza pandemic that struck Camden and the world in the fall of 1918.

By January of 1920 Elizabeth Gosling was working in a wool mill to support the family, most likely the mill in North Camden on State Street. Besides Isaac, there were three girls: Estella Marie, who was older, and two younger sisters, Wilhelmina and Elizabeth. Estella Marie married Thomas F. Gibbons in 1924. By 1930 the family had moved to 531 Ray Street in North Camden, and Isaac Gosling was working at a nearby printing house.

Isaac Z. Gosling was called to national service on March 10, 1941, at Trenton NJ, not too long after the draft was re-instituted. His last home address was given as 325 North 10th Street. Private Gosling died in England of pneumonia while serving with the 85th Quartermaster Depot Supply Company on September 3rd, 1942. He had listed his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Mahoney of 1046 Cooper Street in Camden as his next of kin.

After the war, the body of Isaac Z. Gosling was returned to New Jersey, and he was buried at Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly NJ on January 14, 1949.
