Introduction
Howard Hutchinson was born in Heightstown NJ around 1880. He moved to Camden in 1903 to take a position with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He retired in 1940 after 37 years with the railroad, over 30 as a freight yard conductor in the Pavonia yards that lay between Federal Street and River Road.
Howard Hutchinson married around 1905. His wife Hannah was 13 years his senior, and this was her second marriage. The 1901 Census shows the couple living in a rented home at 2714 Saunders Street in East Camden, a short walk from the freight yards where he worked.
Howard and Hannah Hutchinson made their home at 409 Vine Street in North Camden as early as the 1920s. Their neighbor at 412 Vine, Harry C. Armstrong, also worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, as a toll collector at the Market Street Ferry Terminal, when on July 17, 1937 when two gunmen attempted to rob him. He was shot to death when he sounded the alarm.
Howard Hutchinson was a member of the Camden Lodge 111, Loyal Order of Moose, the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, and Columbia Lodge 21, Shepherds of Bethlehem. Survived by his wife Hannah and a sister, he was buried in Mt. Holly NJ after services at the Schroeder Funeral Home at 715 Cooper Street.
Howard Hutchinson Dies Here At Age 62

Howard Hutchinson, 62, of 409 Vine street, died yesterday. A native of Hightstown, Mr. Hutchinson was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad for 37 years and retired as a freight yard conductor three years ago.
He was a resident of Camden for 40 years and was a member of Columbia Lodge No. 21, Shepherds of Bethlehem, Camden Lodge of Moose and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Hannah B. Hutchinson, and a sister, Mrs. Cora Bogard, of Hightstown.
Services will be held Friday at 2 p. m. in the funeral home of B. C. Schroeder and Sons, 715 Cooper street, and burial will be in Mt. Holly cemetery.
