Bernard C. Schroeder
Bernard C. Schroeder was born Bernhard C. Schroeder in Camden NJ on April 13, 1892. He was the second son, coming after brother Robert Schroeder. Bernard Schroeder later adopted the more common spelling of his first name. His father, Bernhard F. Schroeder had established an undertaking business at 19 South 4th Street in 1884, which later moved to 336-338 Arch Street.
Bernard C. Schroeder followed in his father’s and brother’s footsteps, and at the time of the 1920 Census was active in running the family business. Sadly, brother Robert died in 1925. Bernard C. Schroeder took the reins of the family business, and in the following year moved the business to 538 Broadway, the Labor Temple building, at Broadway and Line Street. Bernhard F. Schroeder passed away the following year.
In 1936 the business was once again moved, to 715 Cooper Street, where the Schroeder Funeral Home remained through the fall of 1969.
Bernard C. Schroeder married, and at least two sons were born to his wife Charlotte S. “Lottie” Schroeder; Bernard K., in 1916, and Kenneth J. in 1920.
After his father’s death in 1927, Bernard C. Schroeder carried on the family business. Bernard C. Schroeder passed away in December of 1965, and was buried at Harleigh Cemetery, survived by his wife and sons Kenneth J. Schroeder and Bernard K. Schroeder.

There is no resident of this city who takes a deeper interest in its development than Mr. B. F. Schroeder, who, since his location here in 1882, has watched the industrial and commercial progress made, and viewed with satisfaction the increase in population from 46,000 to the hundred thousand mark. Mr. Schroeder was born in Germany, in 1849, and came to this country in 1873. A cabinet maker by trade, he, in 1875, entered the employment of a well-known Philadelphia undertaker, and in a few years mastered every detail of the business.
Mr. Schroeder, although a complete stranger in Camden, soon built up a paying business and has been very successful.

Schroeder Undergoes Appendix Operation
Stricken with appendicitis, Bernard C. Schroeder, undertaker, is improving in West Jersey Homeopathic Hospital.
Schroeder, who is the head of the undertaking firm of B. F. Schroeder & Sons, Broadway and Royden Street, was stricken Friday night and rushed to the hospital for an immediate operation. His condition was serious over the weekend, but physicians reported marked improvement today.

The History of B. C. Schroeder & Sons

Bernhard F. Schroeder founded his funeral business in 1884 at 15 South 4th Street in Camden, New Jersey. Growth of the business required moving several times to larger facilities; however, the locations have always been in the center city area which has been the hub of South Jersy [sic]. In 1910 he was joined by his two sons, Robert G. and Bernard C. Schroeder.
In 1936 the move was made to the present location at 715 Cooper Street. The building here was built in 1876 on the scene of encounters between the British troops and the Colonists during the Revolutionary War. It was the home of John Cooper, a descendant of the founder of Cooper’s Ferry (now Camden).
Among the Schroeder innovations in the Camden area were arterial embalming, operation of their own casket factory, funerals from the funeral home, a pipe organ, a casket selection room, and air conditioned facilities.
After the deaths of Robert G. Schroeder in 1925 and Bernhard F. Schroeder in 1927, Bernard C. Schroeder operated the business alone until joined by his sons, Bernard K. and Kenneth J. Since 1945 the firm has operated under the name of B. C. Schroeder & Sons. Following the death of Bernard C. Schroeder in 1965, his sons have continued the Schroeder traditions.
The Schroeders were among the first to take advantage of the courses offered by the National Foundation of Funeral Service. The present selection room was constructed according to the recommendations of the Foundation.
In 1960 B. C. Schroeder & Sons was invited and accepted into membership in the National Selected Morticians. The Schroeders also represent the funeral profession in the Camden Rotary Club.
During World War II, Kenneth J. Schroeder served in the Pacific area as a Naval Aviator flying carrier based torpedo planes. He was referred to in his squadron as “the flynig [sic] mortician.”
For over 85 years the Schroeder traditions of professional service and fair prices have been recognized by the community as evidenced by more than 17,000 funerals.

The Origin of St. Joseph’s Parish—Continued
priest, took over March 6, 1897 and remained till September, 1899. Father Hendricks came for about one week, until the coming of the Reverend Doctor Joseph Rathner, September 17, 1899.
In July of 1892, there arrived in little Saint Joseph’s parish a man who was destined to spend the next 28 years of his life here. A saintly, scholarly, humorous, and sympathetic priest, he became in truest sense a shepherd of his flock, knowing and watching over it, his people knowing and following his leadership. Though he has been gone from the east side for more than 13 years, the memory of Father Anthony C. Shuvlin’s wisdom, erudition, and overflowing charity is still fresh and strong. He was priest and nurse during the flu epidemic, quiet sustainer of the underfed and ill-clothed all during his pastorate, but especially during the post-war slump and the trying days of the stock market crash. Creed or color never influenced his judgment of a man, and when he left, his departure was lamented by people of all races and creeds who came within range of his ministry.
In October, 1915, the old church at 25th and Howell Streets was badly damaged by fire, and the contract for repairs was awarded to James W. Draper at a cost of $3,987.00. While the building was being renovated, Mass was said in the old theater at 24th and Federal Streets.

After a lengthy illness, Mrs. Sue Gee Wagner, 72, of 729 Carman street, died yesterday. She was the wife of Harry J. Wagner, city water department employe, and the mother of Fire Captain Harry J. Wagner, Jr. Other sons surviving are Philip B., Roy A., George C., who is in the Army, and Matthew H., all of Camden, and two brothers, former Detective Howard and Walter Smith. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday at the funeral home of B. C. Schroeder & Sons, 715 Cooper street. Friends may call Wednesday evening. Mrs. Wagner was a lifelong resident of Camden.
