Camden People - Carl Scholl

CARL SCHOLL was born on July 17, 1854 in what was then the kingdom of Prussia, and would soon become Germany. Spelling and record keeping not be the exact science then that it is today, his name turns up on various records as Karl Scholl, Charles Scholl, and Charles G. Scholl.

Carl Scholl married his wife Matilda around 1882. On June 11, 1883 Carl Scholl, his wife Matilda, daughter Emma, and Emma Gehm, who he would later married, arrived in New York aboard the steamship Rhaetia, having departed from Hamburg bound for the United States via LeHavre.

By the spring of 1885 the Scholls were living at 287 Atlantic Avenue in Camden. Tragedy struck on May 29th when Matilda Scholl was struck by a train in Camden while walking along the tracks with her husband.

Shortly afterwards Carl Scholl wed again, this time to Emma Gehm, who had traveled to America with him and his late wife. A daughter, Alma (also known as Alice), was born in March of 1886. Four sons would follow- Robert, Charles, William, Henry, and Albert. Three other children had been born but were not alive when the Census was taken in 1900.

Carl Scholl worked as a laborer for several years during which time he learned the baker's trade. City directories record his address in 1887 at 1211 Knight Street, in 1888 at 1108 South 4th Street, in 1893 at 1837 Salem Street, in 1895 at 691 Tulip Street, and in 1896 at 690 Tulip Street, where he resided through 1910.

Carl Scholl had established a bakery in the 1890s which he operated well into the 1920s. In 1903 he made the newspapers again when his horse and wagon were hit by a trolley car at Broadway and Bulson Street. The horse was killed.

Shortly after the 1910 Census was enumerated Carl Scholl built a new home and bakery at 694 Tulip Street, where he resided until his death in 1931. He apparently owned a good deal of land on Tulip Street, son William moving into a house at 680 Tulip Street shortly before the 1920 Census was taken. William Scholl was appointed to the Camden Fire Department in the early 1920s.

Carl Scholl retired from the bakery business in 1924. His wife Emma ran a small store out of the Tulip Street building where they still lived for a few years. Tragedy again struck in January of 1928 when Emma Scholl, was struck and killed by a bus at South 9th and Morgan Streets. She was buried at New Camden Cemetery on January 6th.

By 1930 Carl Scholl had moved to 907 Morgan Street, the home of his daughter Alice and her husband, John Bisinger, 14th Ward Democratic committeewoman and committeeman, respectively. John Bisinger also was a clerk in Camden District Court.

Carl Scholl died on September 2, 1931 in Gloucester City at the Camden County Hospital for Mental Diseases, NJ at 11:00 AM of a cerebral hemorrhage brought on by general arterial sclerosis. He was buried September 5, 1931 in New Camden Cemetery, Camden, NJ, next to wife Emma.

S.S. Rhaetia

The steamship RHAETIA was built for the Hamburg-America Line by Reiherstiegwerft, Hamburg (yard #341), and was launched on 23 November 1882. 3,553 tons; 107,11 x 13,07 x 8,86 meters (length x breadth x depth of hold); straight stem, 1 funnel, 3 masts; steel construction, screw propulsion, service speed 12 knots; accommodation for 96 passengers in 1st class and 1,100 in steerage; crew of 90.

4 April 1883, maiden voyage, Hamburg - Havre - New York. 4 November 1894, last voyage, Hamburg - Havre - New York. 1895, taken by Harland & Wolff in part payment for the PENNSYLVANIA ; sold to J. H. Bögel, Hamburg. 24 May 1898, sold to the U.S. Navy and renamed CASSIUS . 1900, SUMNER (U.S. Army transport). 11 December 1916, wrecked on Barnegat Shoals, New Jersey.

Over 1100 passengers were aboard RHAETIA when she reached New York in June of 1885.
