ALFRED D. NIGRO was born in Camden on October 13, 1926 to Maria and Angelo Nigro. The Nigro family had come to New Jersey from New York in the mid 1910s. They lived in the Delair section of Pennsauken in the late 1910s and early 1920s before moving to Camden sometime before 1924. Angelo Nigro conducted a grocery for a time at the family home of 432 South 6th Street. The family was still residing at the South 6th Street in Camden in April of 1930 when the Census was enumerated. Alfred Nigro was the youngest of the six children then living at that address, coming after Geraldina, Nunziata, Vincenzo, Clara, and Americo. By 1942 the Nigro family had moved to 912 South 5th Street. Alfred Nigro was drafted into the United States Army on April 19, 1945 at Camden, New Jersey. After his World War II service he returned to Camden. He was living with his parents at 912 South 5th Street when the 1947 Camden City Directory was compiled. Angelo Nigro's family was still at that address as late as the fall of 1956. Alfred Nigro was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on December 30, 1955. By the fall of the following year he was residing at 1866 Park Boulevard in Parkside, and October of 1959 found him |
at 426 Morse Street in East Camden. This would be the family home until the 1970s, when residency restrictions for Camden fire fighters were lifted. Alfred Nigro then moved to 6906 Browning Road in Pennsauken, New Jersey. After many years of distinguished service to the City of Camden, Alfred Nigro retired on July 1, 1981. He opened up a business in Marlton, the Acme Fire Extinguisher Company. He later moved to Cherry Hill and Marlton before his last local home in Mount Laurel. He also had vacation homes, first at the Jersey shore in Brigantine, and later in Florida at Boynton Beach. Alfred D. Nigro passed away on February 25, 2004, survived by his wife, the former Barbara Denny, and his grandson, Nicholas Nigro. He was predeceased by his son Michael. |
