HERE AND THERE IN CAMDEN
Falling from a scaffold on the deck of the battleship Idaho at the plant of the New York Shipbuilding Company Rudolph Bullock, aged 19 years, of 682 Tulip street broke his right foot. He was taken to the Homeopathic Hospital.
Charged by James Buck, of 716 Sycamore street, with assault and battery Herbert Lamb of 741 Baxter street was held under $500 bail by Recorder Stackhouse.
There were four enlistments yesterday at the army recruiting station, the first for a week.

Desiree Murphy, 15, of 732 Tulip Street, was struck and killed by a van driven by Bernard McDevitt in November 1981. The case generated significant community outrage.
Man free on bail in auto death
CAMDEN — A Monroe man was released on $1,500 bail yesterday after being charged with the death by auto of a Camden teen-ager Sunday night.
Bernard McDevitt, 28, was arrested at about 3 a.m. yesterday at his home at 140 Sunny Hill Drive in the Williamstown section of Monroe and charged with causing the death of Desiree Murphy, 15, of 732 Tulip St.
Murphy was crossing a street near her home in South Camden when a van drove onto the sidewalk, knocking her into the air and throwing her body about 100 feet. She died at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Cooper Medical Center, Camden.
Residents in the area demonstrated for about two hours yesterday morning, blocking rush-hour traffic on 9th and Fairview streets to complain about inadequate street lighting near the intersection.
Camden Detective Sgt. Albert Handy said McDevitt was arrested after police identified him as the owner of the van.

2 plead guilty in car deaths
CAMDEN — A Glassboro man told a Superior Court judge yesterday he struck and killed a teen-age pedestrian in Camden last November because he was speeding to beat a yellow traffic light.
Bernard McDevitt, 29, of Park Crest Village Apartments, pleaded guilty to a charge of death by auto under a plea bargain that sets his maximum sentence at 364 days in the Camden County Jail.
McDevitt’s car struck 15-year-old Desiree Murphy, of 732 Tulip St., as she stepped into the street at South 9th Street.
McDevitt, who told Superior Court Judge Leon A. Wingate he has a “terrible driving record,” admitted drinking before the accident. “I was watching the light, not her,” he said.
According to Assistant Camden County Prosecutor Theodore Housel, McDevitt had been ordered to leave a bar on Mount Ephraim Avenue half an hour before the accident because he was drunk. He fled from the scene of the accident and was arrested several hours later in another bar in Gloucester City. — Camden Courier-Post, April 27, 1982
Man gets 364 days in death by auto
CAMDEN — A Glassboro man who struck and killed a 15-year-old girl in Camden last fall when he was trying to beat a traffic light was sentenced yesterday to 364 days in the Camden County Jail.
Bernard McDevitt, 29, of Park Crest Village Apartments, had pleaded guilty to the death by auto charge in April. Yesterday he told Superior Court Judge Leon A. Wingate that he has a terrible driving record and that as a result of a series of violations, his driver’s license has been suspended by the state Department of Motor Vehicles for 21 years.
McDevitt, who had been ordered to leave a bar on Mount Ephraim Avenue 30 minutes before the November accident, fled from the scene after hitting Desiree Murphy of 732 Tulip St. as she walked on the sidewalk.

MARINE IS GRANTED CITIZENSHIP PAPERS
Carl Emil Wittig, 39, a seaman, of 806 Tulip street, became a naturalized American citizen yesterday in U. S. District Court here.
The oath was administered by Deputy Court Clerk William C. Kramer, Jr., with Judge Philip J. Forman on the bench.
Wittig was admitted to citizenship under a special regulation, having served in the United States Merchant Marine for over 36 months.

Two Irwin Brothers of Camden Are Serving in Navy
Alexander Irwin, Jr., 24, and his brother James, 20, of 813 Tulip street, are both in the Navy. Alexander enlisted last June while working as a shipfitter at the New York shipyard. James followed him in October.
They are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Irwin, and both attended Woodrow Wilson High school. James was employed at a sugar plant in Philadelphia when he enlisted. — Camden Courier-Post, December 1, 1942

MRS. ANNIE IRWIN
Mrs. Annie Irwin, of 813 Tulip st., Camden, died Sunday in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.
Born in Scotland, she lived in Camden 36 years. She was a member of Fairview Chapter 219, OES, and of Woodland Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her husband, Alexander Sr.; two sons, Alexander Jr., and James, both of Camden; two brothers, James McClymont, of Kearney, and Andrew McClymont, of Scotland; four sisters, Mrs. Mary McQueen, Miss Isabella McClymont, Mrs. Janet McWattie and Mrs. Margaret Reid, all of Scotland, and two grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 2 p. m. in Evoy Funeral Home, 129 White Horse pike, Haddon Heights, where friends may call Wednesday night. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery, Pennsauken.

HEART ATTACK FATAL TO CAMDEN STUDENT
Margaret Kellett, 18, of 879 Tulip street, a student at Camden High School and worthy advisor of Assembly No. 5, Order of Rainbow Girls, died Sunday at Cooper Hospital of a heart attack.
The girl, who was born in Camden, had attended the American Legion carnival at Fairview Saturday night and planned to spend the night with a sister, Mrs. Esther Price, of Westmont. She complained of a headache on arriving at her sister’s home and later was taken to the hospital where she died at 10 a. m.
Miss Kellett’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Kellett, were in Wildwood at the time of her death and were notified by police. Her father is a carpenter at the New York Shipyard. Another sister, Mrs. Hannah Atwood, lives in Haddon Heights.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday from the family residence with burial in Lakeview Memorial Park. — Camden Courier-Post, July 29, 1941

Police were asked to search last night for Edward J. Cliver, 13, of 900 Tulip street, who has been missing from his home since 6 p. m., Monday.
The boy was described as 5 feet 4 inches tall, 110 pounds and dark complexioned, by his mother, Mrs. Jennie Cliver. He wore dark clothing and a small cap.

John “Jackie” Hindle, 28, of 2277 South Seventh Street, one-time boxer and former policeman, was sent to jail in default of $500 bond by Judge Pancoast in police court yesterday to ensure the payment of a $15 weekly support order for his wife, Helen, and three children.
Mrs. Hindle lives at 924 Tulip Street. She testified she had received no money for several weeks. Hindle said since he lost his job as a policeman about a year ago he had been unable to obtain work.
