New Street
New Street runs from 432 South 7th Street to Trenton Avenue, bisected about halfway between the two by an alley known as Edmunds Street. The rear of the houses on the north side of New Street are open to Blaine Street, which runs roughly parallel to New Street.
The houses on New Street appear to have been built in 1887 and 1888, and were built from South 7th Street towards Trenton Avenue. The first 20 houses on the south side of the street, 700 through 738, appear in the 1887–1888 City Directory, while 740 to 746 New Street first appear in the 1888–1889 Directory. On the north side of New Street, the houses between South 7th and Edmunds Streets, 701 to 719, are listed in the 1887–1888 Directory, while 721 to 733 first appear in Camden’s city directories in the 1888–1889 edition. Oddly enough, the last house on the north side of New Street, 735, does not appear until after the 1890–1891 Directory was compiled.
The homes on New Street were first occupied for the most part by tradesman and working people. Two early residents gave their occupations as “sea captain.” The notable exceptions were journalist James M. Fitzgerald, and Edward Fendall Lummis, a civil engineer. Lummis lived at 716 New Street from 1887 into the 1900s, while Fitzgerald is listed on New Street only in the 1888–1889 Directory, at 731 New Street. James M. Fitzgerald is best remembered perhaps as the co-founder in February of 1886 of The Evening Telegram, a newspaper which later became the Post-Telegram and in time the Courier-Post. He also founded Camden’s first morning daily, in 1889, the short-lived Morning News and General Advertiser.

Camden Policeman Alone Captures Alleged Store-breakers
At the point of a revolver, Policeman Andrews, in Camden early yesterday, placed under arrest Michael Egan, aged 36, of 702 New street, and his nephew, Thomas Egan, aged 21 years, of 732 New Street. They were later held in $500 bail by Recorder Stackhouse on a charge of breaking into the store of Benjamin Stout, of 1130 South Third street
The officer says the men had boxes of canned goods and when he told them to halt they at first refused. It was only after threatening to shoot them they surrendered. The police say the defendants admitted breaking into the store, although they said they were drunk and did not know what they were doing.

Accused by his wife of assault and battery, John Palfrey, of 410 West street, was held under $300 bail by Recorder Stackhouse yesterday.
Ill for four years with an internal ailment, Mrs. Margaret Stanton, wife of John Stanton, a Pennsylvania Railroad engineer, died yesterday at her home, 704 New street. She is survived by four children. Her funeral takes place Tuesday morning.

The funeral of John F. Stanton, a Pennsylvania Railroad engineer, took place yesterday at his home at 707 New street, mass being celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
707 New Street — Woman Shouts Murder and Police Raid House

Charged with allowing disorderly persons to congregate in her home, Mrs. Elizabeth Holmes, 519 Newton Avenue, was fined $25 by Police Judge Lewis Liberman yesterday.
She was arrested at 3:00 AM after a call was sent to police headquarters by neighbors, that a woman had screamed “murder” in the house. Arrested with her were Mary Williams, 38, also of the Newton Avenue address; Charles Weatherby, 28, of 540 Division Street and Edward Werner, 26, of 707 New Street. They were charged with being inmates.
Sergeant John Deith and Policeman Earl Wright said they found whiskey on a table after they went to the house in response to the complaint. Wright testified he had to climb the rainspout to get in.
Mrs. Holmes denied the charge but was found guilty. The other woman and the two men were fined $10 each.

729 New Street — Woman Hurt in Crash; Driver Fined as Tipsy

One woman was injured and a motorist fined as a drunken driver after a collision of automobiles at Derouse and Westfield avenues, Pennsauken township early yesterday.
Miss Mary Hoffman, 729 New street, Camden, suffered cuts of the face when automobiles driven by Allen Hearn, 32, of 328 State street, Camden, and Joseph A. Bresnahan, 40, of 653 North Thirteenth street, Philadelphia. She was a passenger in Hearn’s car.
Bresnahan was fined $225 by Recorder George E. Yost for drunken driving after being examined by Dr. P. H. Thompson.

FREEHOLDER PETITION FOR PRIMARY FILED
First petition for listing on the ballot at the primary election, Sept. 16, was filed yesterday by Walter W. Johnson, of 736 New street, who will seek the three-year term freeholder office as a “Loyal Republican.”
His party designation was entered on a petition with 125 names, filed with Deputy County Clerk Howard Truax. Johnson is a pensioned highway department employe.
Camden county voters will nominate candidates for two freeholders, three or four assemblymen, sheriff and State senator at the primary. Nominating petitions may be filed until August 7. Drawing for position on the ballot will be August 8.
