Greenwood Avenue

Parkside neighborhood, Camden, NJ

Greenwood Avenue

Greenwood Avenue is in Camden’s Parkside neighborhood. It runs from 1402 Bradley Avenue for two blocks southeast to Vesper Boulevard, parallel to Park Boulevard. The 1500 block of Greenwood lays between Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Harleigh Cemetery, the Camden High School athletic fields, and the Camden County Historical Society buildings.

Greenwood Avenue does not appear in the 1924 Camden City Directory. When the 1947 Directory was compiled, there were only six homes occupied on Greenwood Avenue, in the 1400 block. Within a few years, however, a series of brick row homes were built all the way to Vesper Boulevard.

WAITRESS INJURED IN AUTO CRASH DIES

A waitress injured when a car struck a toll booth on the Benjamin Franklin Bridge Sunday morning died early today in Cooper Hospital.

Blair Murphy, chief investigator for the Medical Examiner’s office, said an autopsy will be performed today to determine the cause of death of Miss Wallie C. Lewis, 29, of 1509 Greenwood Ave., Camden.

He said she had been a passenger in a car operated by Mrs. Helen Staton, 35, of 1134 Empire Ave., Camden, when it went out of control and hit a booth as the women were returning to Camden from Philadelphia. Mrs. Staton also was hurt and is being held for observation and treatment at Cooper.

Miss Lewis lived with her mother, Mrs. Florence Goldsmith. She was an employe of the Hot Shoppes at Moorestown Mall.
