Evans Street

Camden Street

Introduction

Evans Street originally ran from 53 South 2nd Street eastward to West Street, between Clinton and Royden Streets. Houses were built on the south side of Evans Street. The one building on the north side, at 407 Evans Street, belonged to E.W. Howell, a carpenter and builder who lived for a few years at the immediate rear, 408 Clinton Street.

It appears from the 1906 Sanborn Map that no lots were ever drawn out in the 200 Block of Evans Street. This block and the 200 blocks of all other streets between Clinton Street and Kaighn Avenue have over the years been converted to industrial and commercial use. By 1885 houses had been built in the 400 Block, according to that year’s Sanborn Map. 326, 328, 330, 332, 334, 336, 338, & 340 Evans Street were built between June of 1885 and April of 1891. 310 through 324 Evans were built by 1906 and 306 Evans was under construction in April of 1906.

As of the summer of 2012 only two buildings still stood on Evans Street — the old builder’s shop at 407 Evans and one dwelling at 426 Evans Street.
