Avon Street
Avon Street is a one-block thoroughfare that runs south from Royden Street to Line Street, between West Street and South 4th Street in South Camden. It is intersected by Beckett Street. It appears to have been laid out between 1878 and 1887. In 1906 there were six two-story brick homes on Avon Street.

‘Upper-r! Who’s Got a Aig-gg!’

The celebrated and fascinating game of “Upper,” otherwise known as “Egg-Picking,” is in full swing in South Jersey today. The “Upper” season is during the Easter holidays and the game consists of an effort by the possessor of one egg to break the egg of his competitor without fracturing his own. Anyway, it’s something like that. In the photograph (left to right) are shown Vincent Zito, of 209 Line street, and Joseph Toriano, of 603 Avon street, engaged in the seasonal contest.
N.J. to Free Killer After 28 Years

TRENTON — The State Parole Board announced Monday it will release a Camden bootlegger who began serving a life sentence for murder before Congress repealed Prohibition.
Peter DiVito, 59, of the 1000 block Prince st., will be paroled next month after serving more than 28 years.
DiVito was convicted for the gangland-style killing of Guiseppe Pirelli, a justice of the peace who lived at 603 Avon st., Camden.
Pirelli was riding with a friend in a car at Newton ave. and Royden st. on Sept. 12, 1932, when DiVito drove by in another car and allegedly shot and killed Pirelli.
Two days later DiVito surrendered to Prosecutor Clifford A. Baldwin and confessed the slaying. He told the prosecutor he and Pirelli, who were partners in bootlegging for two years, had a quarrel over the disappearance of liquor from a “drop” on Line st., Camden. DiVito accused the squire of hijacking the liquor.
On March 11, 1933, DiVito threw himself on the mercy of the court and a life sentence was imposed.
DiVito was placed in solitary confinement at the State Prison on Dec. 30, 1955, for attacking another inmate with a butcher knife. Prison authorities said he slashed Joseph Ianco of Essex County in the prison’s kitchen following an argument. He was serving 20 to 30 years for murder.
In spite of the near fatal knifing incident, prison authorities described DiVito as a model prisoner.

Giuseppe De Luca — 603 Avon Street

Giuseppe De Luca, 75, of 603 Avon st. died yesterday. A native of Italy he was a resident of Camden 44 years and a retired maintenance man for RCA. He was an uncle of Joseph De Luca, Camden County register of deeds.
Also surviving are three sons, Dominick, John and Louis all of Pennsauken; a sister in Italy and seven grandchildren.
Friends will meet Friday at 9 a.m. in the Bocco Funeral Home, 4th and Walnut sts. Solemn requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 4th and Division sts. There will be a viewing in the funeral home tomorrow night. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill.
Mrs. Anna E. Sterrett — 604 Avon Street

Mrs. Anna E. Sterrett, of 604 Avon st., died in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Monday. She was born in Philadelphia, had resided in Glendora for 25 years and lived in Camden four years.
Surviving are her husband, James A.; a daughter, Mrs. John McDermott, Runnemede; a sister, Miss Mary E. Trainor, Camden, and two grandchildren.
Requiem high Mass will be sung Thursday at 9.30 a. m. in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Relatives and friends will meet at 8.30 a. m. in the funeral home of Robert J. Blake, Haddon ave. and Division st., where friends may call Wednesday night. Burial will be in New St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bellmawr.

Vincenzo Pucci, 71, of 605 Avon st., died Thursday in Cooper Hospital. A native of Italy he had lived in Camden 40 years. He was a former employe of White Lamb Finlay Co., burlap manufacturers, Philadelphia.
Surviving are his wife, Felicia; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Doto, and a brother, Dominic, all of Camden.
Solemn requiem high Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a. m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 4th and Division sts. Relatives and friends will meet at 9 in the Bocco Funeral Home, 4th and Walnut sts., where they may call Sunday night. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Save Man, 88, in S. Camden Home Blaze

A neighbor who ran several blocks Friday night when she saw smoke and flames brought firemen to rescue Samuel Liberetti, 88, of 606 Avon st., near West and Beckett sts.
Liberetti was trapped in the cellar by the flames on the stairway and was found by firemen lying semi-conscious on the floor.
August Johnson and Orville Goldsboro, of Engine Co. 1, donned oxygen masks and went into the home as Capt. Raymond Amos, of Engine Co. 1, wet them down and extinguished the flames on the stairs so the firemen could effect the rescue.
Liberetti was treated at Cooper Hospital for smoke inhalation. District Chief Edward McDowell said the flooring of the first floor, the cellar stairway and a large pile of lumber in the cellar were burned.
Mrs. Bertha Alemi, of 602 Avon st., was returning from shopping when she saw smoke and flames and heard shouts of help coming from the Liberetti home. She ran to the 4th and Pine sts. firehouse to sound the alarm. Liberetti’s daughter, Theresa, with whom he lives, was at work at the time of the blaze. Engine Co. 2 and Truck Co. 1 came from headquarters with McDowell.

Charles Sapp, aged 48 years, of 607 Avon street, was prostrated by the heat while waiting for a train at the Pennsylvania Railroad terminal yesterday. He was taken to Cooper Hospital, where it was stated his condition is not serious.

Mr. DeLuca retired in 1942 as a Pennsylvania Railroad employe. He was a member of the Societa di M. S. San Gabriele and St. Rocco, of Camden, and the Unione Abruzzese Casoli Mutual Relief Society, Philadelphia.
Surviving are his widow, Maria; four sons, George Browns Mills; Joseph P., Merchantville, who is a Camden attorney; Thomas and Luke, of Camden, and six grandchildren.
