Camden High School — Class of 1953
Here is another yearbook found on eBay which is reproduced below. This one is sort of special to me, as three friends of mine graduated in this class. The book is presented here in its entirety, with some hyperlinks to pages within and outside of this website, with more to come as time permits.
Camden High School has a long and distinguished history. Many of its graduates went on to careers in public service in the city, to success in business, sports, and in the arts.

MR. PAPIANO sits at his desk and decides what will be best for the “Purple Avalanche.”
In the dedication, the Graduating Class of 1953 expresses its combined thanks and appreciation to a faculty member who has “dedicated” so much of himself to the welfare of the students and the school. Even though it is difficult to choose just one teacher having these qualifications, we think this year we have made a wonderful choice in selecting Mr. Joseph Papiano.
He has earned the right to this honor through years of earnest work on the various teams in Camden High School. This is just a small thank you, in grateful appreciation of all that he has done for us. We’ll miss you, “Pap.”

... who in turn introduced us to ...
TO THE PURPLE AND GOLD:
I notice that your theme is “The Castle on the Hill.” Certainly most appropriate since our school has been known by this name for many years.
I have been interested always in castles ever since I was a boy in school and during the course of my various trips to other parts of the world I have visited eight castles. I lived in the Taymouth Castle for three days for it was in the Highlands of Scotland and the home of one of my ancestors.
In many ways our Camden High looks like a castle from the outside. I can assure you that within our building it is far more livable than the old castles of Europe. These old-time castles are quite dark, musty, chilly, and damp. Our building is quite the opposite. We might consider Camden High a combination of castle and palace, for the palaces I have visited are very beautiful inside with splendid paintings, decorations, light rooms and cheerful surroundings. We hope Camden High is not only a “Castle” on the outside but also a “Palace” on the inside and the best we can make it.
Yours very truly,
Principal

The class of 1955, bewildered on first entering the castle’s portals in September, soon adjusted itself to whole-heartedly participate in all aspects of school life. Scholastically, many industriously overcame the obstacle of new and complex subjects to attain the honor roll. Sophomores became enthusiastic toilers on behalf of extra-curricular activities endeavoring to serve others and improve the school. In athletics, they labored co-operatively on successful sophomore and junior varsity teams. Both maids and pages took advantage of the fine intramural programs offered. Fifty talented members capably aided by Miss Shibe and Mr. Mondelli presented a highly enjoyable play in January. This outstanding group, with such an excellent beginning, is certain to be a credit to itself and Camden High School in the future.

The Junior Class

JUNIORS . . . the SQUIRES
. . . waiting for their acceptance into the highest realms
The Junior Class, the future leaders of Camden High, under the able faculty supervision of Miss Mabel E. Lewis and Miss Jane Kittle, is living up to the standards set for them by their predecessors. With George Manos as Commander-in-Chief; Theresa Brunetti, his assistant; Allan Tessler, the financial wizard; and Mary DeFrank as secretary; the juniors have accomplished much in the last year.
Their play was an unusual success, and brought some future “spring show stars” into the limelight. Not being content with merely being social geniuses, they also have many of the “brains” in the academic field. They form a goodly portion of the membership of the National Honor Society and the Quill and Scroll. The third attribute necessary to a successful class is participation in athletics, and the Junior Class is certainly not lacking in that. Not only have the boys been attributes to athletic teams, but girls also form an integral part of the Girls’ A.A. teams.
It seems that the Junior Class will be ready, waiting, and eager to step into the seniors’ shoes next fall, and if last year is an example of what they can do, they will certainly be able to fill them.

The Assembly Program Committee is a student government organization which is composed of both faculty and students. Its job is to collect, plan and arrange programs for the assemblies for the entire school year.
This year the Student Assembly Program Committee was headed by Elaine Sochacki. Nila Redlus, senior secretary, and Theresa Barnabie junior secretary, capably aided the chairman. The committee consisted of both seniors and juniors.
The hard work this group rendered was displayed in the assemblies of the Dairy Council, Ruth Daye, many of the interesting speakers and the delightful movies.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT
Throughout the year at Camden High, we are aware of the spontaneous activity occurring in Room 108, the Student Government Office. Various committees labor efficiently with one purpose in mind—to bring about a closer relationship between student and teacher. We are united by the fine leadership of Donald Garback, president; Dolores Errichetti, vice-president; Mary DeFrank, recorder; William Caputi, secretary; Eleanora Palecki, treasurer, and under the very capable supervision of Miss Ruth M. Carey.
The experience in our Student Government Organization will act as an important stepping stone for the citizens of the “Castle on the Hill.”

Plays in Season
Purple and Gold, Camden High School — 1953
The second annual Senior Class play was an original score written by Anita Kumove and Nila Redlus under the student direction of Elaine Sochacki. The show, besides containing various musical numbers, featured a skit about the problems of a new girl at Camden High School. Her dating problems and the way she overcame them, provided many laughs for the student body. Taking part in the play were Ruth Morris, Gladys Miller, Leonard Ostroff, Murray Hirshorn, and Stanton Katsoff, plus a singing chorus of forty students. Original songs included the title song, “Senior Showtime,” “No Seniors Like Our Seniors,” and “Dearie.” Rosemarie DiMichele and Ernie Ricco sang “Dearie” as a duet. Ernie also participated in a barber shop duet with Leslie Denbo, singing “On the Banks of the Wabash.”

ARMAND CAPANNA
Under the capable direction of Mr. Armand Capanna, the forty-eighth Senior Public Speaking Contest was held Thursday evening, November 13, 1952. Three girls and three boys presented a pleasant evening of diversified selections to a large and enthusiastic audience.
Early in the fall, these six students were selected from nine other girls and six other boys, from the semi-final readings, by a committee of the faculty.
The program began with a hauntingly beautiful presentation by Dorisann Grossman. She very dramatically gave Edna St. Vincent Millay’s, “The Ballad of the Harp-Weaver.” Louis Bovino then amused the audience with “Tobias the Terrible,” a short story by Damon Runyon. “Final Curtain,” the tragic story of a once famous dancer, was then presented with great sensitivity and acting ability by Anita Kumove. This selection was written by our own Mr. Robert M. Haley. A novel addition to the contest was a combined presentation by Rose Doto and Ronald Rosengard. They presented Holworthy Hall’s and Robert Middlemass’ “The Valiant,” a tragic story of a condemned man. Last, with a humorous and excellently rendered selection, Leslie Denbo presented “Sleeping Outdoors” by Frederick Lewis Allen. And so ended the contest, once again thrilling and unforgettable.

SHEPP, a terror on the Track Team.
Camden High, tops in track in previous years, again boasts of another outstanding team for Coach Nathan Enten, in 1953. Such competitors as Don Hailey, Clint Kilroy, Curt Fisher, and Don Shepp put C.H.S. among the top ranking schools in the state. Other lettermen who were outstanding were: Steve Senich, Ronnie Rosengard, Burrell “Whippet” Williams, Robert Fortune, Roland Phelps, Roland Williams, and Herb Brown.

The tennis team, although not publicized as much as the other varsity sports, has been a dominant figure in South Jersey competition. This year finds no exception to our prospects with four lettermen returning to our squad.
Lettermen Bob Jablonski, Len Ostroff, Ron Peters, and Allan Tessler will probably make up this year’s single squad. The doubles will find Lee Laskin and Phil Schiff. They will also be challenging for single berths.
The 1953 schedule included matches with Wilson, Bridgeton, Vineland, Millville, Trenton, Haddonfield, and Collingswood.

They are always heard on the football field as they entertain the crowds. The peppy crew of cheerleaders headed by Dolores Keating and Elaine Sochacki did a fine job in putting life in the crowds by going through their routines. Co-captains of the male cheerleaders were Louis Bovino and Ernie Ricco.

DUKES AWARD
Elaine Sochacki
Elaine Sochacki received the highest honor bestowed on a senior girl, the L. Ida Dukes Award for character, personality, leadership, and scholarship. A friendly and sincere person, popular with students and faculty alike, she is truly an outstanding student. Elaine has been a member of the literary staffs of both the RECORD and PURPLE and GOLD, where she carried the added responsibility of associate editor; served as Chairman of the Assembly Program Committee, Lieutenant of Traffic, and Co-Captain of the Cheerleaders. A talented miss, she was a member of the Choir and participated in the spring shows and concerts. She managed to find time for all these extra-curricular activities, while being an industrious student and member of the National Honor Society.
OAKS AWARD
Richard Grabowski
Annually the Alexander M. Oaks Award is presented to the senior boy best exemplifying the traits of character, personality, leadership, and scholarship, and who has also been a participant in athletics. 1953’s receipient [sic], Richard Grabowski, an all-around student chosen by his classmates and teachers, well deserved this honor. Richard was a member of both the varsity basketball and baseball teams for three years and varsity football for two. Active in the Student Government Association, which aims to improve the school, he was the capable Chairman of the Insignia Committee, a member of the Social and Assembly Program Committees, and his Home Room Leader. His numerous other extra-curricular activities included the Christmas Decorating Committee and Boys’ Athletic Association Representative.

PRESIDENT
The class of 1953 showed great foresight when they chose Wallace Kuligowski as their president. Wally’s pleasing personality and eagerness to be of assistance, make him worthy of this honor. He displayed his athletic ability on the basketball court and the baseball diamond.
Under his efficient direction, the senior class enjoyed their last and happiest days of high school.
VICE-PRESIDENT
This year’s vice-president of the Senior Class is the very popular and efficient Colleen DiVello. Colleen is kept very busy working for the class, but she still finds time to participate in various other activities. Our captain of the color-guard is active on numerous committees and also works for the student government. With all this eagerness and ability, it is only natural that Colleen should be an officer for the class of ‘53.

SECRETARY
“Pretty and petite” describes our capable Senior Class secretary and vice-president of Student Council, Dolores Errichetti. Everyone admires her, for we all know that “Dee” has that necessary “it” for success in life. Her charm and personality make her the popular girl she is.
TREASURER
Among Louis Bovino’s many attributes are his humor, wit, and jovial personality. Not only is he the class treasurer and co-captain of the boys’ cheerleading squad, he also was one of the finalists in the Wilbur F. Rose Public Speaking Contest. These qualities, plus his scholastic ability, have distinguished him as one of the leaders of Camden High School.
