Broken Neck Kills Gridder
Gettysburg Times —
Camden, N. J., Oct. 18 (AP) — Ben (Sonny) Morrell, 17-year-old captain and star half back of Camden Catholic high school, died late yesterday of a broken neck suffered in a third quarter pile up of a game with Bridgeton high school. Morrell, who scored two touchdowns in leading his team to a 25-7 victory before his fatal injury Saturday, was top scorer in South Jersey with 10 touchdowns in four games.
Following his death, Camden Catholic’s Athletic council went into emergency session then announced Morrell’s death was accidental. The council said the remainder of the 1950 schedule would be played. The only change will be the postponement of a game next week-end with St. Joseph’s Polich high school. The game was moved to Nov. 17.
The council said the school would not abandon football as it did for five years following the death of a player in 1941.
Camden Catholic’s football squad of 60 and senior class of 250 will be released from classes to attend solemn requiem mass for Morrell, Sister Mary Gertrude, school principal, announced. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Several hours before Morrell died, the 1,500 pupils of Bridgeton high school stood in their classrooms and offered a minute’s silent prayer for his recovery. Last Sunday, Morrell’s classmates prayed for his recovery and special prayers were said in the 55 catholic churches in the Camden area.
