WALTER S. BUSKO was born November 10, 1919 to Emil J. and Annie Busko, both of Polish descent who were born in what had been Austria-Hungary and who had come to America early in 1910. Emil Busko was boarding at 1203 Lemon Street (present-day Lansdowne Avenue) when the Census was taken in 1910, as was an Annie Malinowski. It is likely that the two wed soon afterwards.
Emil Busko had worked as a stone mason, but by 1914 was working as a carpenter. The 1914 City Directory shows the family at 1251 Lemon Street, which was renamed Lansdowne Avenue shortly afterwards. Emil Busko’s draft card, issued on June 5, 1917 in Camden, shows that the Busko family had moved to 1245 Whitman Street. Emil Busko was then employed by a Ben Stein.
By 1920 the family had moved to the 1100 Block of Sycamore Street, and by 1924 the Busko family had bought the house at 1187 Sycamore Street.
When the census was taken in April of 1930, Emil and Anna Busko were still living at 1187 Sycamore Street. Emil Busko was still working as a carpenter. Besides Walter there were two older brothers, Stanley, 18; and Emil F., 15; and a younger sister, Helen, 13.
Walter Busko had married Florence Long and had completed two years of college when he was inducted into the United States Army on May 23, 1943 in Camden.
Walter Busko joined the Camden Police Department sometime after January of 1949. By 1956 he was living at 3619 Fremont Street in East Camden, and remained at that address through at least 1970. He had been promoted to Sergeant by December of 1961, and was one of the original officers of the Camden Police Department K9 unit. Walter Busko’s older brother Emil was still living at 1181 Sycamore Street as late as the fall of 1977.
Walter S. Busko retired from the Camden Police Department in 1981. He and wife Florence lived in Vincentown, New Jersey in the 1980s. Sadly, Florence Busko died of cancer in October of 1985 passed away on July 18, 1991. Walter S. Busko passed away on July 18, 1991.
Camden Man Held as Drunken Driver

Rafael Maldonado, 23, of 435 S. 4th st., was released in $1000 property bail on Saturday for a hearing Thursday on charges of drunken driving and operating a car on a learner’s permit without an accompanying driver.
Maldonado was arrested at 5th and Washington sts. by Patrolmen William Troutman and Walter S. Busko, who with Desk Sgt. Henry Leutz and Jailer William Stibi signed statements alleging Maldonado was intoxicated. Dr. Lee J. Hammet pronounced him unfit to operate a motor vehicle.
Two Maple Shade Youths Fined

Two Maple Shade youths drew $10 fines after their arrest near 6th and Vine sts. Sunday night.
Charles Alexander, 18, of 443 N. Fork Landing rd., and Robert Deveny, 19, of 25 S. Holly ave., denied police charges they did not move from the corner when ordered.
Patrolman Walter Busko said he was ordered to disperse the crowd after a fight was reported in the vicinity. He said the gang on the corner was warned several times and that later Alexander and Deveny were found sitting on a steps, a half block away.
Dzick said he thought Alexander and Deveny were playing “wise guys” with the officers.
Boxing Show Slated to Aid Drop-A-Buck

More than 500 members of boys clubs and Little League teams in the area will be guests at a special amateur boxing show Tuesday night at Convention Hall from which proceeds will benefit the Frank H. Ryan Drop-A-Buck Club.
Sponsors for the young guests are being solicited now by a committee headed by Police Insp. Anthony Skolski.
The show will be staged by the Camden Police Athletic League and sponsored by Camden Local 35, New Jersey Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association.
Ten three-round bouts will present boxers from the Philadelphia Police Athletic League and some Middle Atlantic AAU champions will be on the card.

WASHINGTON TWP. — Services will be held Monday for Walter S. Busko, a retired Camden police officer who died Thursday of heart failure at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. He was 71.
Born in Camden and a longtime resident of the city, Mr. Busko had recently moved to the Turnersville section of Washington Township.
He became a Camden police officer in 1952 and in 1960 helped establish the first canine police corps in the state for the department. Mr. Busko served in the juvenile bureau after his promotion to sergeant in 1964.
Mr. Busko was made acting captain of the Community Relations and Juvenile Bureau in 1969. From 1974 until his retirement in 1981, he was the administrative aide to the chief of police.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 1 and a member of the Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local 35. A member of the Superior Officers Association, Mr. Busko also was active in the Police Athletic League and helped establish the Camden Police Federal Credit Union.
During World War II, Mr. Busko served as a U.S. Army staff sergeant.
Mr. Busko was the husband of the late Florence (nee Long).
Surviving are his two daughters, Marilyn Muldoon and Nancy Barnabei, both of Turnersville; a brother, Emil of Clementon; and five grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Bocco Funeral Home, 1300 N. Kings Highway, Cherry Hill.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 362 Ganttown Road, Turnersville.
Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson.

Surviving are his two daughters Mrs. Marilyn Muldoon and Mrs. Nancy Barnabei both of Turnersville. His five grandchildren Michael, Karen, Jamie, Justin and Jeffery. His brother Emil Busko of Clementon. Mr. Busko is a retired Lt. of the Camden City Police Dept. Relatives and friends of the family will meet for his viewing on Sunday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the BOCCO FUNERAL HOME, 1300 N. Kings Highway Cherry Hill, N.J.
