Private Townsend C. Young was born in Williamstown, New Jersey on July 20, 1898, the son of Charles B. Young and his wife, the former Mary Elizabeth Pew, of Gloucester City NJ. He was a member of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, New Jersey National Guard, and left Camden with his unit on July 25, 1917 for Camp Edge at Sea Girt NJ. He went to Camp McClellan at Anniston, Alabama with the 3rd, and was assigned to Company G, 114th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division when his national guard unit was reorganized. He apparently also had spent some time in the Navy prior to his enlistment in the National Guard.

Private Townsend C. Young was killed in action on October 12, 1918, north of Verdun, when the 29th Infantry Division entered the Argonne-Meuse battle. He was survived by his parents, and a brother, Stanley, of Gloucester City NJ. His body was returned to New Jersey after the war ended. He was buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery, where he now rests next to his mother and father.

The Townsend C. Young Post 3620 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Gloucester City was named for him.

Gold Star Mothers will be the honor guests at the first annual military ball of the Camden Post, No. 980, Veterans of Foreign Wars, to be held on Friday evening, February 3, in the Elks ballroom, Seventh and Cooper Streets.

Elaborate plans for this ball are under the chairmanship of John S. Pennington.

Invitations have been issued for patrons and patronesses and the list will be announced early next week.
