Thomas J. Carter
THOMAS J. CARTER was born in Camden on March 24, 1930 to Thomas J. Carter and Ethel Joiner.
After serving in the United States Marine Corps, Thomas J. Carter was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on December 1, 1954. He was assigned to Engine Company 1 on Pine Street and reported for duty the same day. He resigned from his position with the Fire Department on October 15, 1959. Emmitt Smith replaced Thomas J. Carter on December 16, 1959.
Thomas Carter made his home at 830 Sycamore Street in the mid-1950s and was still there when he left the Fire Department. The 800 block of Sycamore was razed in the 1960s to make way for Interstate Route 676. In 1958 he founded the Bridgeton Miracle Revival Tabernacle church in Bridgeton, New Jersey, where he was also pastor. Rev. Carter resigned from the Camden Fire Department in December of 1959.
In 1967 Thomas Carter’s younger half-brother, Jesse Flax, was appointed to the Camden Fire Department, where he served for over 26 years. Nephew Jesse N. Flax was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on May 1, 1994 and as of 2018 is serving as the Deputy Chief of the department.
Directories from 1977 through 1991 show Thomas Carter and family at 785 Line Street. Thomas Carter’s wife, the former Catherine Ringo, passed in 1988. Thomas Carter remarried and moved to Muncie, Indiana in 1993. He died there on August 3, 1994, survived by his wife Regina M. Carter, six sons, a daughter, brothers Jesse Flax and William Flax, and a sister, Lula Washington.
Fireman’s Stolen Car Is Found Stripped

A city fireman’s stolen car was found abandoned early Sunday on Somerdale rd. near Chews Landing. Missing were four wheels, a spare tire, the battery and $150 of carpentry tools.
The owner, Thomas Carter, 830 Sycamore st., told Ptl. Lawrence Chomier, of Gloucester Township police, the automobile had been parked near the 4th and Pine Streets Fire Station Friday night. When he went off duty Saturday the machine was gone, Carter reported.
Chomier said he found the stripped car off the roadway near old Black Horse pike. A check with Camden police showed Carter reported the car stolen.

Miss Rosetta Wallace, daughter of Doshua and the late Mrs. Wallace, will marry Edward E. Fisher, son of Mrs. Anna Ingram and the late Jacob Fisher, Sunday at 3 p.m. Both are of this city. Fisher, a Korean veteran, served in the Army. He is employed by the Camden Lumber Co. The Rev. James Carter will officiate in ceremonies at 830 Sycamore st. at 3 p.m. Relatives and a few friends will attend a wedding dinner at 426 Chestnut st.

Thomas J. Carter, 64, of Muncie, Ind., died Aug. 3 at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
Born in Camden, Mr. Carter lived there until he moved to Muncie in 1993. He had been a city firefighter and president of the Minority Building Contractors and Tradesmen Inc. in Camden. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps.
In 1958, he founded the Bridgeton Miracle Revival Tabernacle, Bridgeton, where he was also a pastor. He was a member of the House of Prayer for All People in Muncie.
Surviving are his wife, Regina M.; six sons, Thomas J. of Norcross, Ga., Dr. Michael L. of Willingboro, Gerald B. of Maple Shade, Steven of Sicklerville, Robert J. of Pennsauken and Mica Izell of Camden; a daughter, Eva Izell of Camden; two brothers, Jesse Flax of Camden and William Flax of Newark, Del.; a sister, Lula Washington of Michigan; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Glory Tabernacle (formerly Bridgeton Tabernacle), Buckshuten Road, Bridgeton.
Arrangements are by the Greenidge Funeral Home, Atlantic City.
