Obituary
Stephen E. Quarles, affectionately know as ’Steve’ was born to the late Annie nee Jennings and Hock Quarles on June 21, 1936 in Camden, New Jersey.
Steve was educated in the Camden City Public Schools; and a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in 1954. He attended Shaw University. He played varsity football and baseball. He had a life long love of sports. Steve was a serious Miami Dolphins fan!
He served in the Army in Germany and while there began boxing. He was a knockout in the ring and out! Steve was honorably discharged in 1964. He drove a bus for Transport of New Jersey back when it was ’Public Service’, then decided he was ready for a career move. Steve joined the Camden City Police Department where he served with distinction for 25 years. He retired in 1994.
’Steve’, ’Daddy’, ’Boss’, ’Pop-Pop’ was a dedicated family man. We knew he made us his priority. He was our anchor with his quiet strength. The love affair he shared with his wife Joyce was a beautiful thing to see. It gave us all something to strive for. He was a great friend and when you look around this Church you can see that he was a friend indeed. He was well and truly loved. Steve laughed, danced, enjoyed playing cards and a good party, had a baseball cap for every occasion, and believed you could fix anything with a roll of silver tape. His relationship with the Lord was intensely personal, and uniquely his own. He would often tell us “Don’t worry about it, I’ve been talking to Him and it’s going to be all right”
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Joyce, daughters Toni Gabri-El and Denise D. Ashley; son Alfred C. Ashley III; son-in-law Will-I-Am Gabri-El; granddaughters Jada Gabri-El, Jurnee Gabri-El, Jasmine Gabri-El, Zakia Ashley, and Zoelys Colon; great-grandson Zamir Colon; sister Violet Parker; sisters-in-law Rose Quarles, Lonita Green, June Jackson, Terri Lewis; brothers-in-law Harry Jackson, Norman Lewis; uncle Donald Collins; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
It is with joy we celebrate his life and with sorrow we continue life without him. We know ’he did it his way’ and we are so glad he did.
Lovingly submitted,
The Family

My Precious Love
Sometimes I tell myself that you’re not really gone.
I feel your tender touch and no longer feel alone.
I see us walking hand in hand like we used to do.
It’s hard for me to accept......
That your life on earth is through.
There were so many dreams we had not yet fulfilled,
All the hopes of a future that we were going to build.
All our friends and family have been so very kind,
They try to ease my broken heart and my troubled mind.
But how can my heart be mended, when it has broken in two?
Part of my heart is still on earth,
the other part left with you.
It is hard to see tomorrow,
When I can’t accept today,
Because I love you so much Steve
And you have been taken away.
I will always miss you Baby,
Time will not erase the pain,
All the raw emotions of losing you,
Words will never explain.
I will cling to the warm feelings you brought into my life,
Maybe somehow it will ease my confusion and emotional strife.
Someday we will be rejoined in Heaven up above,
But while I’m still on earth I will cherish every memory of our precious love.
Somehow those precious memories
Will have to carry me through,
Until the time comes for us to walk hand in hand
For an eternity.....together.....Joyce and Steve.
Love always, Joyce

Daddy
Often I’ve said “Dad, Please fix it”, and right away you’d come.
Missing you like this is hard, so help me with this one.
I’m not ready yet, and I’ll never be.
But I do understand that now you are free.
A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands can rest.
God broke my heart to prove that He only takes the best.
I hear you now, whispering in my ear.
”Baby Girl, the support he left you is very near.”
Selfishly I want one more hug, one more kiss, and of course one more dance. And when I sleep I get the chance.
I love you,
Toni
