Private Stephen Slomkowski was born in what is now Poland on December 27, 1896.

Stephen Slomkowski and his family were living at 1240 North 25th Street in Camden’s Cramer Hill neighborhood when he registered for the draft in June of 1918. He had been working for the Public Service Company which operated trolley cars out of their facility on Newton Avenue. He was called up and inducted into the United States Army on August 28, 1918 and sent to Camp Meade, Maryland where he trained with the 154th Depot Company. On September 24 he was assigned to the 113th Engineer Regiment at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana.

Private Slomkowski fell victim to the Spanish influenza epidemic that killed millions in 1918 and 1919. He died of bronchial pneumonia on October 17, 1918.
