Private First Class Stephen A. Pipito was born February 6, 1918 to George and Margaret “Maggie” Pipito. His father had been born in Pennsylvania, his mother was an Italian immigrant who came to the USA in 1911. They ran a soda fountain, and the Pipito family in 1930 lived at 1855 South 4th Street in Camden’s 8th Ward. Stephen was the oldest boy; his brothers were Michael, Alfred, and George Jr. At the time of the 1930 census, Stephen’s paternal Aunt Rose Foga and her children Charles, Susie, and Peter were also living with the Pipito family. At the end of Prohibition, George Pipito Sr. opened his business up as a tavern, which the Pipito family operated for almost 30 years. Stephen Pipito later married, and lived with his wife Helen at 437 Viola Street in Camden.

Stephen Pipito was drafted into the United States Army, and was assigned to the 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. His brother Michael enlisted in the Navy with two friends in December of 1941. He was killed in action on July 9, 1944 during the fighting in Normandy. His father, George Pipito Sr., had passed away in Camden NJ on June 25th. The death of Private First Class Pipito was reported in the September 25, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post.

Stephen Pipito was brought home to New Jersey after the war. He was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Delaware Township (present day Cherry Hill) NJ in July of 1944 next to his father, his mother joining them in 1963.

23 Girls, 21 Boys, Will Get Certificates for Hatch Junior High Today

Forty-four pupils of the Mickle School, Sixth and Van Hook Streets, will graduate from the B-A grade at commencement exercises to be held in the school auditorium at 11 a. m. today.

The class is comprised of 23 girls and 21 boys. They will enter Hatch Junior High School in November.
