Radarman Second Class Michael Domenic Capparelli, Serial: 02458869, USS Underhill (DE-682), U.S. Navy. Awards: Purple Heart. He lived at 1296 Mechanic Street, Camden NJ. Memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines.

Radarman Second Class Michael Dominic Capparelli attended Camden High School, graduating as a member of Camden High School’s Class of 1942. He had taken the college preparatory course at Camden High. In his senior year, he was one of the lead actors in a school produced play, “Georgie Porgie.” He lived at 1296 Mechanic Street in Camden prior to entering the Navy.

Michael Capparelli was lost, along with Seaman First Class Nicholas Fondacaro of Blue Anchor in Winslow Township NJ, when their ship, the USS Underhill (DE-682) was sunk by a Japanese human torpedo northeast of Luzon, Philippine Islands, 24 July 1945. Both men were killed in the initial explosion when the torpedo struck.

Michael Capparelli was survived by his father, Mr. Giacomo Capparelli, of the Mechanic Street address.

Camden Students to Offer Comedy — Camden Courier-Post, December 19, 1941

One-act Play to Feature High School’s Yule Party Monday

“Georgie Porgie,” a one-act comedy, will feature the annual Christmas entertainment to be held Monday night by Camden High school pupils.

Miss Ethel G. Lord, of the speech department, who is directing the Christmas pageant, said it would consist of several numbers by the school orchestra, a trio of Christmas carols by members of the verse-speaking choir, and the presentation of the comedy.

Leading roles in the play will be taken by Ruth Kates, Michael Capparelli, Sennett Batten, Adele Manheimer, Peggy Moffett, Peggy Carter, Robert Harter, Catherine Casselman, Wanda Pointowski and Warren Weiss.

Music for the program will be under the direction of Robert M. Haley, high school music instructor.
